SOURCE: DYT 4000 Lawn tractor won't start

I solved the problem after buying carb and fuel pump rebuild kits. The carb kit didn't fit anyway, but didn't need it. The problem was in the fuel filter. I had forgotten the problem happened when I ran out of gas. Inside the fuel filter is a washer held in place by a spring. Without fuel it apparently lost pressure and the washer slipped out of place about 1/2", which was enough to let all the gas through that could. The rebuild kit had a new rubber gasket. I won't let it run out of gas again.

Sounds like the carburetor needs a good ultrasonic cleaning as old gas will leave behind varnish and gum deposits clogging the carburetor fuel passages up.

By "turn over" my assumption is that you mean that the engine cranks but will not start. The engine must have both ignition spark and fuel to start. Check spark first by carefully removing a spark plug, leaving it attached to the wire. Use a pair of insulated pliers to hold the plug and ground against the engine block while cranking the motor. If you see a bright blue spark you know you have ignition spark. If not, you must further diagnose the problem. Assuming you have spark, you would turn to make certain the engine is getting fuel. Make certain tank fuel shutoff valve is in the open position. If you have fuel filter assume it is clogged and install new filter. If you see gas passing through the new filter when cranking engine and the engine still does not start make certain that the choke is operating correctly. It should be fully closed to start and fhen move to 1/2 open, then fully open as engine starts. If engine still does not start it is probable that the carburetor will need to be removed, disassembled, cleaned and reinstalled. As a final note each mower or rider has safety switches and devices that can prevent an engine from starting if they are not working correctly.

I would check the big three first of all. Spark, compression and fuel. Sounds like you have spark and fuel. I would get a compression tester to check actual amount of compression. If all three of those things are good I would check valve lash. You will need make, model and serial number of engine. If you post these I can help find specs for you. Good luck.

Test for spark. Make sure the air filter is clean. Then make sure fuel is getting from the gas tank to the carb. Old rubber fuel line deteriorate and stop up small ports and parts in the carb. An inline fuel filter is a good idea on these larger engines. Sometimes, a larger B & S engine needs the OH valves adjusted to start easily and run properly. If after attempting to start, does the new plug get wet or even smell like gas? You should always use gas LESS than 30 day old. Gas goes stale like bread and milk. You can remove the fuel line from the fuel tank at the carb to drain old gas. You can also remove the carburetor bowl to check for water and sediment (which need to be cleaned out). Check these things and post back.

Hard to start

Have we had a tune up on this tractor lately. Like changing spark plug, air filter, oil and may be even the gas in the tractor.
Clogged air filter, Bad gas, fouled spark plug may be your problem. Like everything they need maintenance one in a while to keep them running well.
You just can't get on them and ride.

The starter bendix is not engaging properly the bendix pushes the starter gear into the flywheel gear when the starter spools up, it may need minor lubrication.
It sounds like the engine is not getting fuel as it should, the main jet may be restricted from varnish if she stumbles under a load especially if the plug tips are white after running for 1/2 an hour.
Remove the float bowl and clean the jet, make sure the fuel is still good, gas that smells like a library is more like varnish and less like fuel.

Replace the spark-plug, check the quality of the fuel(gas that is mixed or was stored more then three months is stale and wont fire correctly) make sure the fuel and air filter not clogged. If there is no change then your problem may be more technical, a nest may be restricting the govenor or you missed something with the carb and there still is debre causing it to stall.
