Question about Garden

1 Answer

Hi, I have a Craftsman lawnmower, sel propelled, over 10 years old. It doesn't seem to start unless I spray gasoline into the carburetor. Also, it will only keep runnning if I continue to spray into the carburetor, if I stop spraying the motor will eventually stop. An added problem I have is that when use the primer button you don';t seem to hear anything (No suction noise). Can you help me?

The Primer bulb most likely has a crack in it. If it does then there won't be sufficient suction to draw in the fuel. Also, if you remove the carburetor, separate the upper and lower halves so you can get to the fuel bowl, check that the float needle isn't sticking inside the hole. Look for dirt and other contaminates.
Do you by chance have the model # of the mower? It will be in the following format: XXX.XXXXXXX The model # sticker is usually located on the deck behind the engine. And what HP is the Engine? (It should be a Briggs and Stratton.

craftsman mower startes the stops prim bulb dosent seem to work if prim ckt or bulb leaking air will the stop carb from drawing fuel i have cleaned carb twice

If when you press the primer bulb and you do not get gasoline to go into the carb, then you have a crack or leak there in the fuel system. The fuel system is supposed to be a closed system. Any air leaks will cause the carburetor to not draw fuel. Hence why you have to keep spraying fuel into the air intake to keep it running.

Make sure your fuel lines do not have any cracks or splits, make sure the primer bulb is not cracked. If your plastic fuel lines are hard and brittle then they likely will leak.

Have a self-starting, self propelled toro lawn mower about 5 years old, I ran it out of gas by accident & now it won't start

It seems to be an obstruction in your fuel delivery system. Get a can of ether and a spray a short burst of it into the breather area near the carburetor, if the mower starts up and then stalls out, then you may need to get your carburetor serviced.

When I try to start my Craftsman Model # 917.388861 lawnmower, it will start and then dies right away, then Iit would start unless I prime it. Before it started doing this, the lawnmower was running very...

Sounds like you will need to clean your carburetor.
Be sure to use compressed air to blow out all the fuel and air passages.
Sometimes you can get by with priming the carburetor a few times, and letting it run a few times like that and it will flush the gunk out of the jets, but most of the time you will need to rebuild the carburetor.
If the mower/weedeater is over a couple years old, then I also recommend that you buy and install a new carburetor repair kit, because the diaphragm will get hard and that will cause it to be hard to crank.
When you clean your carburetor and remove the jet screws, You will first seat the jet screws and count the number of turns it takes to seat the jets from their original position.
That way when you go to put the jets back in, you know how many turns they were in/out.
Please rate me,
Good Luck,
I hope this helped
