Question about Panasonic Televison & Video

1 Answer

I bought an Onkyo Theater system and hook it up according to directions. I can not get sound to work, I think it has to do with my TV settings. I have a TH-P50S10P tv.

I have hooked up the Onkyo system HT-R980 as in their manual. The receiver manual states that I should see an On screen display on my TV to set my HDMI input. I do not get the display on my TV

No, the tv settings have nothing to do with it since the sound would go thru the Onkyo whatever the settings if the connections were done correctly - using the optical cable between the tv and the receiver. In the Onkyo the only thing you should do is to set the correct source - the optical input in which the cable is plugged in.
But if you are planning to use the Onkyo for the sound coming thru from another source, as in a dvd player, then you must set it accordingly (use the correct input connectors and select them as source) and connect the tv in the correct output.

That is the AV input setting , the tv would detect it automatically when active and switch to it by itself. Since you have the image then it was correctly detected - the sound is not there because the output HDMI connector (the one on the right , with the white color around it) from the Onkyo is a monitor one only = it only transmits the video, the sound should be processed and emitted by it, the receiver. You need to connect the cables correctly and then select the correct input in the Onkyo - there is the problem, not in the tv. There is a special setting that would allow the output connector to receive the sound from the tv, but your tv doesn't support that so if you want to hear the sound received by the tv you must connect a separate optical cable and select it as source.

I bought an onkyo hts-5300 it has grave reviews for sound. Yet it is not producing what i feel it should, what is the ideal db setting for the speakers for crisp sound and deep theatre style bass

"Grave" reviews??

If you set it up as specified in the manual it will be optimized. As far as volume settings while listening go, that is subjective and entirely up to you, your speakers and your neighors.

I just bought a onkyo hts5200 and I can't seem to get the sound to work with my ps3. Is their any secrets I need to know? I have hooked it up according to their diagram for HDMI AV component hookup. I...

If you are using the hdmi hookup, then you will also need to use either a composite or coaxial cable for the sound. Yes I know this "sounds" crazy, but I had the same problem for both the cable and bluray set ups with this receiver. I thought the hdmi would work for both the picture and sound but for some reason the hdmi only works for the picture with this receiver. I bought mine from Crutchfield and without their tech service I would never have guessed this was the problem. (I never would have purchased this receiver if I knew this was the design problem/issue.) Good quality composite cables for the sound works just fine.

I want to hookup my laptop with my 7.1 Onkyo HTR540 home theatre, onkyo has optical input, i am confused how to hookup with my laptop which also has HDMI port but my home theatre does not have HDMI Port

If you have a plasma, or otherwise HDTV display, what you would do is send you information in two different directions.

Connect the video directly to the display. Connect the audio through your home theater, and set both units accordingly.

Onkyo HT-S5100 Theater System

It's possible that you have the wrong speaker set (A or B). Look for that button and change the setting and see if that works

No surround sound on ps3

Set the sound out put on ps3 to the optical out put then set sound on ps3 to give you dolby digital, dts, aac etc.

PS, do not set the hrtz range above 100 as this can damage your speakers.

hope this helps.

Sound, but no video

The video is switched by a single chip similar to the one that switches the audio signals. It is possible that the chip is defective. Even as a shotgun approach, changing the chip shouldn't be more than $15-$25 for the part.
Keep us posted.

Hooking up a sony playstation 3 with digital optical cable

Here's one solution, if you have an audio output from your tv, you can go from the audio output on your tv to the audio input on your receiver that way anything that is playing on your tv for example, playstation 3, dvd player etc. Anything playing on your tv will have audio on your onkyo home theater system. The other thing I would try if you want to hook ps3 directly to receiver is go to your connection settings on your ps3 menu and change your connection method to digital optical cable.

New home theater setup- no signal at tv using onkyo tx=sr605

Could well be the quality of your cables. if you have high end cables the consult a service agent. if you have the cables that came with the products, go and get some better ones.
