HI. You can Expect resistance in the range of 20 to 40 ohms. Infinite or kilo-ohm resistance usually indicates a bad element and it should be replaced.

This easiest test you can do is to turn on the oven and observe the heating element. If it glows red, the element is working. When baking, the broiling element may come on to assist with preheating or to maintain the oven temperature. When set to bake, if the broiler comes on, but the baking element does not, the likely cause is a burned out baking element.

NOTE- The element may have small holes and bubbles on the coils as well. This is a sign of a burned out element. Test the element connectors as well.

Where do I locate the fuses that controls the oven heating.

Hello Pat;

My name is Peter. I am a retired field service appliance technician.

When you go into self cleaning both of your burner element peak at there max temperature, well above 500 degrees F.

1.) Oven Element - Over time the elements will fail. Turn the upper element on. Inspect for sparking where there may be a crack in the element. Turn the upper element off, inspect for any cracks.

If there are no cracks then you lower element is fine.

2.) Each of your ovens have a independent thermocouple. Both may have failed due to the extreme heat. Oven thermocouples will fail on older units.

3.) Lets go to the source. You have what is called a infinite switch in your oven. This switch controls your oven temperature. If this switch fails then your oven will not work.

Ok, lets assume you or a friend are good with tools. With a multi-meter set to the lowest Ohms, In the back of your oven there is a sheet metal cover. Remover the cover, disconnect the two contacts on each thermocouple, and Ohm them out. (Power Off at your breaker box first) You should get a reading of '0' Ohms, anything else the thermal couples are bad.

But, I tend to believe, You have a bad infinity switch. You can also Ohm this out as above with a reading of '0' Ohms.

This component is about $35.00 USD.

If I were still working for Sears Home Services I would charge you $350.00- $450.00 for this service call. Send me your model number and let me see what you have. goodwinpeg@aol.com.

What should an oven temp sensor's ohm reading be if it's at room temperature and not faulty? Whirlpool 30" electric range, model number WFE361LVD Bake element and broil element do not heat...

The oven sensor should be between 1000-1200 ohm's at room temperature or roughly 1080 ohm's. I would place the Tech Sheet here but Whirlpool will not allow me to post their manuals or Tech Sheets. You are welcome to the Tech Sheet HERE I hope this helps Thanks, Sea Breeze

Hi n664v,

This sounds to me like a Thermostat problem. If it is an electronic version Oven, then it will be the Sensor or PC Board Module controlling temperature. Please let me know what Make and Model your Oven is, so I can better assist you.

Your thermal fuse or TOD mounted to the back of the oven went out during the self clean,it shuts off the power to the elements.
The oven must be removed from the wall to change this.

I used the self cleaning function and now the over wont work. The lights work, but no heat is produced. I get no error messages, any ideas?

might want to check if element has continuity with light-wire-battery technique or VOM (volt ohm meter)...unplugged and element out... then while element is out can plug back in and use VOM to check element receptacle for 220v AC (to see if power coming to element (good to check also since continuity check can be fooled by a break in the nichrome wire within the element where the ends of the break only retract to make a gap when main current is applied)
........If no voltage at recepticle then between their and control switch/temperature selector.
...the full blast current and heat of self cleaning, could have completed the ready to fail point/switch/etc

Our oven's heating elements will not come on althought the display seems to work correctly.

Wekiwa, your TCO, (thermal cutout) probably opened during the high temps in self clean. You will have to remove the back panel and replace it. It should be just under the vent back there. Part number 4450934. You can ohm it out first to make sure, it will show open (no continuity) if bad. This is an easy job, won't take you that long. Kill power to the range before going back there. In doing a little more research on your model, I see there was a service flash where they recomend moving the TCO over to one side so the cleaning cycle doesn't affect the TCO. This may be covered by Whirlpool. You might want to call them and inquire. Catriver..post back.
