F12 function key doesn t work

Function keys are special keys used for assigning program shortcuts and specialty tasks to the keyboard.
They are located at the top of most keyboards and labeled "F1" through "F12."
Some keyboards may only feature 10 function keys, while others may have as many as 18. These keys often go unutilized by the average computer user, but they may have very important tasks for some users, which can lead to problems when the keys do not respond.
Fixing nonresponsive or malfunctioning function keys is quite simple, and should only take a few minutes.

Connect your keyboard to your computer, and power it up.
Open a program that uses the function keys such as Microsoft Word or Microsoft Excel. Check your keyboard for an "F-Lock" or "Function Lock" key.
This key is used to toggle function-key support; when it is toggled on, the function keys will not work.
Press the "F-Lock" key and then try using a function key in the selected program. "F1" is a good key to test, because it is set to open a "Help" document in all Microsoft software.
If the key does not work, press the "F-Lock" key a second time, and test the keys again.
If the keys still do not work and you are running the Windows 7 operating system, you may need to install a "hotfix" from Microsoft to fix the key functionality.
Navigate to the link entitled "Microsoft Support: Some Function Keys do not Work Correctly." (See Below.)

You may need to restart your computer after the installation is complete.
Your function keys should now work properly.

I have a Gateway keyboard. The email key - F2 - does not activate email. Further, the keys which control the sound of external speakers [switch on/off; increase or decrease volumn] do not work. I can't...

Most of the time, these specialized keyboards come software utilities that need to be downloaded into your computer to make these specialized keys work correctly. If you do not have a software disk. Check www.gateway.com and look for their support page, search for you keyboard device model and look for downloads and drivers for that keyboard.

If this keyboard came with a new computer, look for a keyboard utility in your program list.

If you found this answer helpful, please remember to leave positive feedback.

Thank You,

Part of keyboard does not work.

Windows only recognizes the standard keys on a keyboard. Special-function keys need to have appropriate driver software installed to make them work. If you bought this keyboard as a replacement, there should be a CD included with the required drivers. If this is the keyboard that came with a retail computer system, the drivers would already have been installed.

Most manufacturers include a directory somewhere on the hard drive with any special drivers so you can reinstall them if needed. Or you may have gotten one or more CDs with your system, and the drivers will be on those. You can also find the drivers at the manufacturer's website in their "support" or "download" section. This is usually the best way to get the drivers anyway, since you will get the most recent versions with any updates. Installing the drivers once you have them is normally a simple matter of running the installation program.

Special keyboard keys not working.

You need install or reinstall the driver software that came with the computer this keyboard was supplied with. Windows itself doesn't know what those keys do.

If you are still using that computer and you haven't erased the original factory software, the drivers should be in a directory somewhere on the hard drive. Compaq usually has a folder called "compaq" on the root (that is, it should be c:\compaq) and a folder in that called "drivers". This isn't always true, but the drivers you need should be in a similar folder somewhere.

If you don't have the drivers on the disk, you can download them from the HP/Compaq website, but you'll have to have the computer model number.
