I'm afraid so. This is classic main bearing wear. The drum sits on a shaft, just like the front wheel on a car. There are 2 bearings, one each side of the drum housing. Usually the inner bearing water seal fails and the bearings begin to rust, causing it to become noisy. Once the water is that far, its not long until the outer bearing goes. At some time in the process, you will begin to get a water leak from the rear of the drum tht will get progressively worse.

You can change the bearings and I work with professionals who claim that they can have a drum out, bearings swapped and back in within 45 minutes. I've never got it down below an hour and a half on a machine I know well and you will need, if not SPECIAL tools, then a tool of some description to knock out the old bearings that are pressed into the drum. This is a job for the hardened DIY enthusiast and a pig of a job if you've never done it before.

Bearing sets cost (depending on the machine, the supplier and how many you buy) around £25 in the UK (About $40). Calling out a guy to do the job will easily quadruple that cost (He will probably come with a refurbished drum, swap it out and then take yours away to refurbish).

With this information, you now have to ask yourself if it's worth the effort on a machine that may be reaching end of life anyway.

Typically, the noise will get SCARY and the water leak annoying long before the machine actually fails to work. My advice would be take this as notice that your machine is about to go to the scrap yard in the sky and start looking for a replacement before it croaks on you at an inappropriate moment.

My 4 year old roper washer leaves grease on clothes. On spin cycle the machine makes a screaching noise, and the clothes don't spin dry.

Possible that the belt is slipping and also there is some issue with the agitator as the gaps within seems to bring up the dirt or grease mix to the clothes.
So it is important to remove the panel and check the play on the belt, replace if the play is high and check if the agitator bearings are worn out. If so the agitator assembly must be taken out and checked.

Machine making a knocking noise during spin cycle. The drum shaft has alot of free play front to rear and I suspect that is where the problem resides.

If your machine is making louder than normal noise during spin it could be the failure of the basket. Mine is just under three years old and the basket became looser than normal in the tub. I diassembled the machine...a lot of work...and found the aluminum casting around the shaft and bolted to the basket had rotted away. It looks like it was attacked by the bleach since I had my water checked and its pH is fine. It is likely the root of the smell we have experienced with our clothes when they sit too long in the machine. I spoke with GE and they gladly agreed to replace the parts needed but it is a ton of work to install them. I plan to treat the new part with some zinc chromate if I can get some before the parts arrive. See the picture if it attached correctly.

Hi brawn253

The oil is comming from the transmission. The only way to fix it is to have it replaced. alot of the orlder machiens have this happen and keep working for many years after. as for the squeal its normal. its just the break some of the oils have got in there and the squealing is a resault of that. I wouldnt be to worried about it.

Washing machine is louder then normal on the spin cycle.

This sounds like the rear bearing is going. After getting louder, the next problem is grease appearing on your clothes during the spin cycle. This is a very major repair.
