Question about Janome Memory Craft 4000 Sewing Machine

Quilting on Janome MC 4000

I want to quilt and have lost my user's manual. Is there a way to disengage the feed dog so that I can quilt without having to twist the whole quilt all over the place? Also, if this is possible, what presser foot should I use.

Thanks,

Cindy Davis

I have a MC4000 and a manual. To raise or drop the feed dog, remove the accessory box and feel at the back of the free arm there is a lever that will slide left or right to raise or lower the feed dog. I am not a quilter, but the manual says to use foot A (zigzag foot) and accessory L (quilter) which appears to be a guide. Cheers, Deb, Townsville, Australia

Fabric does not move under pressure foot

Look for a lever under the plate that disengages the feed dogs for free form quilting. More detail would help. My wife is a quilter.

When quilting more than 2 fabrics, the feed dogs won't push the thicker fabric through. What else can I do?

So you are quilting but not free motion quilting... Generally, a walking foot is used when just doing straight stitch quilting. It has feet that actually walk at the same time the feed dogs are pulling.

How do I set up my Janome 1600p-qc for free motion quilting?

You will need a darning foot or free motion quilting foot for your machine (these feet are shorter than the regular feet which allows space between the foot and the needle plate to manually manipulate your fabric). Then drop the feed dogs and, if your machine does not have that capability, there should be a cover plate included with your machine that snaps over the feed dogs. Install a brand new needle in your machine, set it for a straight stitch, and test the stitch. Sometimes, the upper tension needs to be loosened a bit so the bobbin thread does not poke through the top of the fabric.

Then...practice, practice, practice...

FWIW, I've found it helpful to use a "Supreme Slider" on the base of my machine. It is slick and allows the fabric to move easily. Special gloves are helpful too because your hand will become dry and begin to slip on the fabric. Using cheap rubber gardening gloves works for some people.

How do I drop feed dogs on jem silver 662?

Here's a manual:

Instruction Manual Janome Jem Silver 662

The following is for a 660, but it doesn't mention anything about darning or free motion quilting:

https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=3&ved=0ahUKEwih_NGBzpjRAhXKh1QKHbKIAvwQFggoMAI&url=http%3A%2F%2Fjanome.com%2Fsiteassets%2Fsupport%2Fmanuals%2Fcompact-models%2Finst-book-jem-gold-660.pdf&usg=AFQjCNEwCPZs5n8s4wdgIHMGHbN-GvDe-w

You can also contact a Janome dealer. If the machine does not drop the feed dogs, there should be a special plate accessory to cover them in order to do darning or free motion quilting.

Perhaps this is the accessory you need:

How do I drop the feed dogs for quilting on my Brother XL 4011 sewing machine

It should be included in the owner's manual. (An internet search did not turn up a manual for your machine, but a model close to your machine may operate very similarly.) You can also contact Brother Support.

This may help:

Frequently Asked Questions

The other possibility is that the feed dogs on your model do not actually drop. There may be an accessory (darning plate) in your kit that covers the feed dogs during darning or free motion quilting. (Shown on page 38 of the following manual):

The User Guide suggests there is a different Needleplate (must be thicker than standard) used for darning, free motion quilting etc.

Frame quilting with janome 1600 db

am I right that the feed dogs do not drop on this machine?

Yes, this is correct....but you have to change the needle plate to a thicker one, so the feed dogs will be below the needle plate.
