I have a optiplex gs 270. The bios is not recognizing my 2 other drives the pin s on the cable are stock and the sata drive is the os. It has just a red cable that goes into one of two slots that are for ata on the M.B. My hardware manager will not list the 2 other hhd's and I went and took a sd card reader out of another computer and it is listed as a standard disk drive. There are four slots in the card reader. Is is a Usb device. I think I have both hhd's to cable select but I will try doing primary then slave? Or is the ata drive primary then I go slave then slave agian?

First, do you have a 40-wire or an 80-wire parallel-ATA ribbon-cable?

If you have the 40-wire cable, you need to set the jumpers on both of the old drives.
Set one disk-drive to 'master' (maybe also add 'with slave present').
Set one disk-drive to 'slave'.

If you have the 80-wire cable, you need to set the jumpers on both of the old drives.
Set both disk-drives to 'C(able)S(elect)'.

Is the new SATA drive just a "data" drive, or did you install Windows onto it?

Attach just ONE of the EIDE drives, and see if it is detected as "slave" or as "master".

Disconnect that drive, and connect the other EIDE drive, and see if it is detected as "slave" or "master". Hopefully, you'll get one "slave" and one "master", when using an 80-pin IDE cable.

Intel Rapid Technology off line hard drive?

Open the computer and check cables. 0 is the 1st drive and usually the primary. Then login into BIOS and verify the drive is listed there. It must be.
Crashing may be a sign of hardware failure, but fix the HD problem 1st. Then run chkdsk c: /f/r C being the drive letter from the command prompt.

BIOS will not let me change boot sequence of hard drives. It lists both of them (one SATA and one IDE). Trying to recover info off IDE, primary OS is on SATA. How do I get BIOS to let me change sequence?

check the the jumper pins on the back of the HHD, SATA should be set to master & IDE to slave read the top of the HHD first coz some HHD's have master without slave presant.
boot up as normal then go into "computer" & get the data off the IDE drive.

New larger hard drive can only be detected as Primary Slave

Floydage, some ribbons are different in the orentation of pin#1. try a differnent cable...but you said that you tried that right.? have you tried to make sure you have the latist BIOS. It could be this paticuler drive have a different bios it self...and yes drive's do have chip's and software in them. If nothing ells just load the OS to that drive anyway and than change the drive letters in windows.

How do I set the jumpers on my Maxtor DiamondPlus 9 80 GB SATA /150 HHD drive as a second drive.

SATA drives are jumperless -- each drive has its own cable to the motherboard or controller -- so there's no setting on the drive to say "primary" or "secondary" as there was with IDE.

The connection on the controller or the motherboard will determine which drives are primary and which are secondary.

Sata hard drive could not be detected during win xp installation in acer aspire M3600

It could only be a limited number of problems:

1. SATA drive is not connected to the primary port
2. SATA cable is faulty
3. SATA drive is faulty

The most common solution is to move the cable to the primary/first port

Installed more ram and now can't find the hard drive

Pull out the new RAM chips and install the old one or ones and see if it boots ok. I had this same problem. This can also be caused by no using matched sets of RAM chips. In my case I added one and used the factory one as well, caused the same issue as you have.
