    Thanks,
I will have to wait until Monday to go further with this. I have a spare bios battery.when I'm in there I will check all connections.I look forward to resolving this with you. I did disconnect the battery during the dis-assembly. Would that have lost the time setting? There was no fan comment and i believe it was running. More on Monday thanks

Hi,

Welcome to Fixya. Error 0271 Check the Date and Time Setting or Fan Error. You can change the date and time in BIOS settings. After that save the settings and see if you will still have the same error, If you do then unfortunately this could also mean a dead CMOS battery. I suggest you replace the CMOS battery first.

Here's an image of the CMOS battery

As for the FAN error, it may mean that your fan is not working or not connected. either way you may need to open the laptop up to know for sure.

If you have questions please let me know. Thanks for using Fixya.

TIME DATE LOCK 0271

This IBM 0271 error code means the Date and Time setting in the BIOS is incorrect and needs to be reset in the BIOS configuration.
This is caused by a dead or nearly flat BIOS battery.
You need to replace the BIOS battery and reset the Date and Time.

Are you a computer whizz? (do you know a lot about computers like me?)

Could be the Cpu fan (Central Processing Unit)
That could be lethal to the laptop.
Just as well it's a IBM other wise . . .
As for the error it means the time and date are not set.
soloution: run the bios setup utillity to reset time and date.

I've only seen this error appear on IBM thinkpads. Your EEPROM with the following steps.
You can try this to test the EEPROM
1.unplug AC,battery, HDD and and your cd/dvd rom drive.
2.press power button,last more than 10 seconds
3.plug battery and AC power
4.power on
5.when see the IBM logo, press F1 button immediately.

If the same error pops up, try it a few more times. If the error keeps displaying then it is the motherboard

Error message 0271

There is a backup battery underneath the main battery and the age of the T23s means these need to be replaced (after 6 - 7 years!). You can pick one up on eBay for $10 or less w/shipping and you will need the exact part as they use a propietary connector. If you do the replacement yourself have patience, IBM made the plug very difficult to line up - but it will eventually. If you try to force it you can breack the motherboard connector off and require a costly tech repair.

Sounds like it is asking for the power supply to be plugged in before it can start, which indicates a bad Battery, if you are allready plugging in the power supply unit, you may also have a bad or wrong power supply unit,(check that it is set too the correct voltage setting for your country too either 120V or 240V.) Possibly you know someone with the same working laptop so this can be verified by using thier working Battery/powersupply unit or as an alternative can both your battery and power supply unit be taken to a computer or electronics outlet store for simple bench testing before deciding on replacement. Lastly it may be a powersave mode or setting that has been activated before the last shutdown in this case press and hold the power on switch down, until all the lights go out. Leave it turned off for 30 seconds and restart. Press the esc or delete button on startup (before any screen info comes up)and adjust the power save mode setting in this systems bios.
