Question about GE Refrigerators

1 Answer

GE (PSS26SGPASS) Side by Side Refrigerator has been tripping circuit breaker. The compressor is very hot but seems to be functioning properly since the freezer is at 14 degrees and refridgerator side is at 37 degrees. What could be causing the tripping of the breaker? Seems like a thermal trip. I cleaned condenser which had lots of dust build up.

the condenser is in the hot sun and the fan that moves the air is not cooling or removing the heat from the condenser fins
This places the head pressure of the compressor too high and so the circuit breaker trips from the excessive current draw to run the compressor under this load
The answer to this problem is to place shade cloth on a frame which covers the air conditioner by placing it in a shady area
another solution is to replace it with a split system where the outside unit can be placed away from the sun

I have a westpoint no frost delux tropical refrigerator that is not cooling on the fridge side and is not freezing on the freezer side. I cannot regulate the temperature on the right side as it stoped

Your refrigeration cycle has an evaporator inside the freezer section and air is blown as necessary to keep fresh food side cool. If neither side is cooling, you have most probable problems with the compressor not turning on. Some of the first things to check is pull the refrigerator and locate the condenser coil. Some of the coils are manufactured inside the sides of the refrigerator. If you have an external condensing coil, check to see if the condenser fan is rotating and the cleanliness of the coil. I have seen coil so dirty, no heat can escape and causes the compressor to overheat and the internal inherent motor protection opens and turns the compressor power supply off. After cleaning the coils and checking the proper operation of the condenser fan, allow the compressor to cool before plugging back on and turn the thermostats in both compartments to about 5 on the thermostats. You will know if the compressor starts if the smallest line coming out of it starts getting hot to the touch (be careful the line can get hot enough to burn your fingers) and check to see if the condensing fan operates. If these two things check out your refrigerator will start working again. If either of these two do not work, it will help determine which needs repaired or replaced.

I had one customer who had problems similar to your problem and found the breaker feeding power to his recepticle had tripped. Try plugging in an electrical device to the plug in to see if power is available if you do not have a multimeter. If no power, check breaker panel for tripped breaker. This was his problem. His was caused by trying to plug in to many loads on this one circuit thereby tripping the breaker which was rated at 15 amps.

Any further problems than this need to be analyzed by a refrigeration tech.
Hope this helps.

I have a 3 year old GE Profile microwave that began tripping the breaker recently. We would just reset the breaker and all would be fine for a day or two and then it began happening more and more...

If it tripped the breaker with you only hitting the door switch it sounds like the door switch has a direct short. This means a hot wire is going to ground not good. But the first part of your problem sounded like the circuit was overloaded for the breaker or right at the limit of the breaker.(probably a 15 amp breaker) Breakers do get old and if you are working at there limit they will trip and more often over time. What else is on this circuit? Make sure you are not overloading your line. Take each appliance or light and take the wattage listed on it and devide it by the voltage this equals your amps then add all the amps up they should not be more that your breaker and usually only 80% of your breaker the 20% is for devices with motors or compressors that spike amps temporarily. good luck and be careful

My Whirpool Refrigerator tripping the electric supply in regular intervals inspite of all electrical intallations are okay

Unless there is a dedicated circuit of 20 amps to the refrigerator this will continue to happen When your refrigerator goes into defrost and other things like lights fans air conditioners are on the same circuit it will have no choice to not trip the breaker. Try this turn the breaker off and how may thing in your house stop working? You need a 20 AMP circuit or this will possibly damage the compressor or weaken the breaker because it has tripped so many time. Thanks, Please rate my solution, I have done this work for 30 years. Thanks, Sea Breeze

Refrigerator cools as normal. Trips 15 AMP circuit breaker.

a full size refrige has to be on a 20 amp circuit, a 15 amp is just not big enough.. you should also know that this circuit has to be on a 12-2 gauge wire.. I also highly recommend installing a 20 amp HD receptacle

Refrigerator is getting no power

Check the relay and the compressor with a volt meter. Make sure that you are getting proper voltage. 110 - 120 volts at both the relay and the compressor. If nothing happens or everytime you try to test and the circuit keeps popping first check for bad wiring make sure nothing has come loose. If all the wiring checks out including the ground then the only thing that will pop a circuitbreaker is a bad compressor meaning it is drawing to many amp and you will either need to have a company replace the compressor for around 600 dollars or get a new unit
