The clicking noise is the reader arm jumping across platters on your hard drive you have a dirty hard remove the hard drive then give the hard drive a firm tap on the side to free the reader arm
all of your devices if you see a yellow question mark?or exclamation mark ! or red x
right click to reinstall drivers or
if you can see your usb but its not working
ports(com&lpt)right click update driver
just replace the cable of the hard disk, when you plugged the external disk drive you got that windows could recognize the USB device change the cable everything should work fine again, sometimes the wires inside the cable will be damaged due to bending or stretching or placing heavy equipment upon the cable,
check the USB leads that attach to the motherboard usually red-white-green-black make sure they are securely seated and have no dust build up on them dust will cause static and a lot of unforeseen problems
hope this helps

1999 Carrera 4 hasn't been driven for about one month. Now it won't start but you can hear this clicking noise from the back. Lights, windows and radio all work. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Make sure your battery is fully charged and all battery connections are clean and tight. If the vehicle still makes the clicking noise when you try to start it, then it is your starter solenoid.

It makes a clicking noise when starting. What causes this and is there a remedy?

I think your drive is failing. There is a hard drive inside of that and the arm is loose. It probably won't read files correctly very much longer if it still can. You need get get your files off of there before you loose them. If you're having trouble reading drive, put it in the freezer. When it's good and frozen plug it back into computer and copy fast. The cold will contract the metal and make the arm work again for a shot time. It should still be on warranty but get your files off fast before it fails.

It sounds like your starter needs cleaned or replaced. The poping noise could be the actuator not engaging right. As for the engine light, it could be just a coincidence.
