Question about Refrigerators

1 Answer

You sent me a part number which I lost. Your assessment was correct it is a cracked pan that has caused the leak. My Kenmore refrigerator model # is 596 75232404. Also should I order the part from you or do you suggest some place else. Thank you, Rita Havens

What would cause it to leak water?

all refrigerators will make condensation it is were evaporator meets air takes moisture out drips down into a pan located on or near compressor it maybe as simple as a plastic hose out of collector pan that will have on some refrigerators a fan .
heat from compressor and fan will evaporate the water.
your problem also can be bad door gaskets letting humid air into it
Check door gaskets make sure it seals check drain pan may have a rust hole or its plastic and may have a crack in it
send us a model # we can tell you were to look

Hello Ray;

My name is Peter. I am a retired field service refrigeration technician.

Ok, It may have been the water bottle. But, you have an old unit.
So, lets check it out once more.

1.) After time, from the heat, the plastic tubing for both your water lines to the water dispenser and ice maker will dry rot and crack.
Check: Pull your unit out. Have someone draw a glass of water from the water dispenser, while observing in the back both the water supply valve and the larger plastic tubing going to the water dispenser. Is there a leak when pressurized?
2.) Wait for when your ice maker fills and observe the smaller plastic tubing. Does it leak under pressure.
kenmore-coldspot-model-106-53532300-q5zw2lslmquh13tixvlr3ryr-3-0.jpg Part Number: Substitution: 4387492 Cost: $10.00

3.) Drain Pan - This too will crack over time do to heat. Pull your unit out so you can get behind it. Remove the lower back cover.. There are about 8 screws easily removed. Observe the drain tube from the under body of your refrigerator and the black drain pan where it empties. Observe around the drain pan. Are there and brown or dark stains on the floor? If so, then you have a cracked drain pan.
Repair: Unplug the refrigerator. The compressor and surrounding copper tubing prevent you from replacing the pan. When I was in the field, I would take duct tape and seal the cracked area. Then, I would cover the duct tape and surrounding area with a high temp silicone adhesive.

Leaking under neath front of refrigerator

Usually any defrost water sits in a plastic pan and evaporates away in normal operation. If the pan becomes brittle it cracks and leaks water. Pull the fridge out and look on top of the black pot (compressor) Is there a plastic drain pan sat on top of it?
Sometimes if the fridge is working hard a lump of ice can form on the pipework going back to the compressor which melts causing some water at the front of the fridge.
Lastly, the insulation under the fridge may have broken down, allowing condensation to form and drip. If the drain was blocked, the water would be inside the fridge, not underneath.

Drain pan filling up. I emptied the pan and about 24 hours later its full again. We have ice and water in the door the freezer is cold just pan filling

If your evaporator fan is working properly the water would evaporate back into your home or business. If the evaporator fan was not working the freezer would not freeze and fresh food would spoil. That is way too much normal condensate unless there is a leak around the door seal or leak in the cool water supply tank storage or filter area. Not knowing the model number I would think you may have a drain opening under the crisper drawer that leads to pan. And think it may be a good idea to turn water supply off until sure of the source. Puddles of water are on the floor from the bottom of the refrigerator opposite side of the ice maker (near the compressor or the condenser fan)

Your defrost drain is either blocked, missing the defrost pan, pan cracked or poring through the body of refrigerator. It also could be a leak at your dual water control valve. Let me know what the model number is for example 213.54698 and I will be able to get a picture of your refrigerator and help you better, Thanks, Sea Breeze

Water leaking out bottom of refrig/freezer

Sounds like maybe two things. Your freezer isn't closing correctly and condensation is forming, bad seal maybe. Other option is you need to clean the pan on the bottom of the fridge. Condensation gathers there and it is normal, but if you alot of crud down there it will cause water to gather. Hope this helps...
