I can start the piolot light but when I release the pressure on the control to put it to on, the light goes out.

you have a faulty thermopile, bad gas valve or an obstruction in pilot assembly that is preventing flame from making contact with thermopile.check thermopile output with multi-meter for starts.reading should be about 100mv to maintain pilot.

It sounds like a thermocouple has gone bad. this is a very common problem with gas powered things ie; water heaters, furnaces, hot tubs. The telltale sign is when you release the pilot light button it won't stay lit. This is a safety feature and is relatively inexpensive and easy to repair.

Pilot low when release button, goes out after turn on

Try replacing the pilot generator which is in the pilot assembly. It is the piece with a silver cable coming out of it and that cable splits open into a red and white wire at the gas valve, That piece holds the valve open once it is hot enough and is likely not putting out enough voltage to do its job.
