On notebooks, the "no charging problem" can be directed to some few possibilities:
1) The battery has reached it's life cycle, and need to be replaced: Every battery has a life cycle, around 600 full charges, and it loses its capability of holding energy from the recharger. So, you have to replace your battery every year or so, if you are a heavy user
2) The power supply can be defective. Either malfunctional, broken, or not supplying enough current for the battery recharging system
3) The power circuit on your laptop can be defective. If your take your battery out, and your computer can't stay on AND you are sure your power supply is OK.
So, to test either your power supply and your power circuit, take the battery out and plug it into the wire. If it works, and your battery is old, its probably the battery itself. Most computers have a "battery health checker" on the bios (when powering up your computer, press either DEL or F1 or F2 depending on your bios version)
Sincerely John

Hi there. Your problem seems to be the battery. Usually when the battery is at the end of its life the indicator stays at 0%. If you are still unsure you can go to download.com and get free battery testing software. Good luck...

I have a gateway P-6829H laptop p/n 1015734. My battery does not charge anymore and stuck at 2% capacity. I get the message "plugged in, not charging"

This message means that you have over used your battery. The battery will no longer hold a charge and must be replaced. I would recommend purchasing a new battery.

Give it time to charge and try again. There are power setting that may be shutting down the machine at less than 10 or 5 % charge.....

My Gateway MD2419U laptop will not charge after it reaches 87%. It says "0% remaining" when unplugged and "0% available (plugged in, not charging)" when plugged in. Why does this...

Its an issue with the BIOS code.
Updating the BIOS will fix the issue.
Update it to Version 9A30a for Windows 7 and Version 9A10h for Windows Vista.
You can find the BIOS update on the Gateway website.

My gateway nv54 laptop battery is ok, I've checked it in lap-top tech service. But the system gives me a message "consider replacing your battery" or something like that. With a full-charged...

Unfortunately there isnt much you can do, the only real solution that has ever been known to work is to completely drain the battery (I mean keep trying to turn it on even after its died, many many times) and then put in on charge for 8hrs.
Other than that, regardless of what people say, there isnt much else you can do. And I wouldnt put too much faith in any tests these techs have run, its almost impossible to really see what state the battery cells are in.
For future reference, when you are using your laptop plugged into the mains, take the battery out, that wil help prolong its life, and never let it get too hot or charge it longer than it needs (can bend the cell walls)

My laptop will not charge up, it only works when plugged in. Official message it give me is: 0% available, plugged in not charging.

If the system is in warranty, contact Dell and get a replacement Battery. If system is over a year old you most likely need to buy a new battery. If replacing the battery doesn't resolve, then it will most likely require a motherboard replacement.

Gateway 7405 battery and charge problems

This sounds like a problem with the charging circuit on the board.
There could be a problem with the power jack:

They are available but will require disassembly and probably some soldering to replace.
It might be best to try another MB if you can find one cheap. Like this:
