Question about Dewalt D51822 Clipped Head 2Inch to 312Inch Framing Nailer

1 Answer

Dewalt D51822 nail gun does not fire nail. When trigger is pulled air can be felt coming from the trigger area. I have replaced the trigger valve assembly and it had no effect. Gun is about 3 years old but has not been used heavily.

There are 4 orings that cause this problem. Two are in the trigger valve installed on the firing pin. The firing pin can be seen just under the trigger, however if you replaced the valve, you could assume no problems with the trigger valve. I would take apart the old trigger valve and examine the orings on the pin. The pin should fit snugly in the trigger valve cap and also in the valve. If the orings look good and it does fit snugly, most likely valve is still good. The other two orings to suspect are installed on the cylinder inside the nailer and make contact with the bulkhead (white plastic piece that seals the cylinder note parts reference 55, 74, 11 on the parts list). For parts list and to order parts go to www.toolpartsdirect.com Good luck with your repair.

My D51822 nail gun blowing air where nails come out. what do i need?

Dewalt framing nailers use about 6 vinyl orings that fail. These orings are yellowish in color and turn into a soft mush allowing air to leak. Replace with buna (black rubber) for long life. If air leaks out nose, replace two vinyl orings at the bulkhead and one in the head. If air leaks from the trigger valve, replace vinyl orings on the trigger pin. Good luck with your repair

Dewalt D51238 not firing when trigger pulled but air does come out?

Remove the head and lube the headvalve with white grease. If gun still does not fire and makes air noise at the trigger valve then orings within the trigger valve are worn. Replace the trigger valve or if you have a source for small orings, just replace the two orings on the metal stem (2mm x 1.5mm). Dewalt uses vinyl orings on the stem that fail. Replace with buna. Good luck

Air comes out the nose of my dewalt framing nailer

Again sounds like blown O ring give it a squirt of 3in1 oil and fire it several times (if oil is compatible in your gun). Repair center if that doesn't work. Trash can also get in the air orifice and stop moving parts from moving.

Nail gun will not shoot a nail

Check the safety trip make sure it is pushing back far enough. If it doesn't then it won't do anything. When it was fine just moments earlier.

D51822 plunger will fire (and impact wood) but will not retract enough to grab/push out a nail.

Dewalt nailers have some vinyl orings that fail. Usually found within the trigger valve, headvalve, and between the cylinder and cylinder spacer (white plastic piece). A dewalt nailer with failing orings may not leak air however. The vinyl orings tend to start to crumble and the tacky-crumbling pieces tend to create a seal. Easy way to check condition of the vinyl seals in a Dewalt is to remove the trigger valve and look at the orings on the firing pin/stem (2mmx1.5mm orings). If these two orings are soft and sticky, then orings inside of gun most likely the same. Check band on the outside of the cylinder (part # 390159-00) is what causes piston to return to top. But also check to too tight or too loose piston oring, bent shaft of driver and worn/ broken lower bumper. If all is well with internal parts and piston does not return to top, too much air is leaking past nose of gun. Oring kit sold by dewalt will contain most of the orings needed. The kit may not have orings for the trigger. You will at need two orings (2mm x 1.5mm) for the trigger valve stem or just replace the valve. Use white grease or silicone paste lube on all the orings. Good luck.

It will not fire the nails. Unit is cleared with no obstructions. This has happened several times but now it will not work

If your gun is over a year old, you may have failing orings. Dewalt used vinyl orings (yellow to gold in color instead of black rubber) in the gun that fail. The vinyl orings are installed around the cylinder and inside the trigger valve. The gun may not leak air, however will not fire. The repair kit has all necessary orings, however may not include the trigger valve. Good luck

DeWalt D51822 Framing Nailer: Replaced the trigger valve and air is still coming from the nose of the gun. I would think no air should get past the trigger valve until pressed. What's wrong?

Dewalt framing nailers use some vinyl orings (gold or clear in color) that fail too soon in both the trigger and the cylinder spacer. Air out the nose of gun indicates air is leaking past the cylinder spacer seals (If piston is pushed down with air leak then headvalve seal is leaking (remove nails for this test)). If piston is not pushed down with leak, remove head and pull out the cylinder with cylinder spacer (white plastic). Place the cylinder on workbench with bottom up. Push down on locking ring and remove retainer to release all the other parts. Take picture or take note of parts together and as you pull them off to aid in re-assembly. You will need to replace the two orings between the white cylinder spacer and the cylinder. Order oring kit from dewalt or just purchase one ( # 141 universal oring ) and one metric oring 74.4mm x 3.1mm from hydraulic parts store. If the piston was pushed down with air leak, replace headvalve orings in the head. Good luck with your repair

All the sudden the nail gun stop working, pull the trigger air leaks out at trigger area

I had a similar problem with one of my nail guns. What I found was a small rubber o-ring in the trigger mechanism had split. Once I replaced this the problem was corrected and the unit functioned fine.

You could replace the whole trigger assembly for about $35. But if you remove the assemble and replace the split-ring this would only cost a couple of bucks at most.

Trigger assembly shown below. ereplacementparts.com is one possible source for the trigger assembly others can be found on the Internet.

After shooting a nail, it fires out two more nails. It's a Dewalt d51822.

There is a replacement trigger valve available from Dewalt. The new part number is 5140095-73 (the old part number was 641006-00 ). I am not sure however if the new part is just a natural upgrade or if it was changed to address an issue. I have seen these guns double fire and fire once when air is connected. I would change trigger valve and four orings that make contact with the bulkhead (part # 395215-00). These orings are in the repair kit available from Dewalt (kit does not include the trigger valve). Use caution for now, do not load nails until you are ready to nail; then pull out nails from rails when done . Good luck
