Question about Toshiba Computers & Internet

1 Answer

I have a Toshiba 1TB External Hard-Drive, model PH3100-1EXB, which has suddenly become nonresponsive. I have done the obvious like making sure it is hooked up correctly, made sure the drivers were up to date, and even ran a restore point on my computer. Still when you turn it on and go into the Computer file it doesn't load or allow you to access the data. The light on the device starts out strong and then begins pulsating or throbbing. The whole computer than basically freezes until you disconnect the device. The problem began a few days ago while transferring data to the device. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

When going to the USB Mass storage icon, it stated that the device was working properly. I uninstalled the device as you suggested and shut down my pc. When I turned it back on and then connected my hard drive, it was recognized and reinstalled. I was hopeful but it still didn't resolve the problem. I went and looked at the owners manual online and found that the "Virtual CD" icon and "Toshiba HDD partition" icon are not appearing when I go to my computer to access the hard drive. It shows the drives by letters H:, G:, and I but no icons. Now I am getting an error message saying " function could not be performed because of an I/O device error." I don't know what that means but I bet you do. I wonder if the USB cable came loose while it was transferring data the other day and messed something up? When connected, the device has slowed my entire computer down to a crawl. As soon as I turn it off, everything is back to normal. I have 12 years of pictures on this drive and my entire music collection Riz. I really need it back up and working. Please help!

I ran the Check Disc Utility on the three drives associated with the hard drive and got the following results.

H: Cannot open volume for direct access.

G: The type of the file system is RAW. CHKDSK is not available for RAW drives.

I: The type of file system is FAT32

Then because everything is so incredibly slow, Check Disk Utility encountered a problem and needed to close.

I am now off to work for the day and will be back in 10 hours to try what you may recommend next. Be safe in your travels.

Any new ideas? It's been a few days since I last heard from you.

I downloaded and copied the Fedora-15-i686-L files to a DVD. The folders copied were EFI, isolinux, LiveOS, and a GPL file. I'm not sure if I did that correctly though? Was I suppose to copy the whole thing or just a file within these folders? Also, how do I get my computer to boot from the disc instead of launching Windows automatically? I'm running Windows XP on my desktop and Windows Vista on my laptop. I am hopeful we are getting close here. Now let's bring it home once and for all.

I was able to create the Linux DVD and boot my computer using it. Once it loads however, there is just a screen with a blue background, a tree, and a couple birds. You have a arrow (pointer) but that's it. There's nothing there to click on or to open. I tried to connect and plug in the Hard Drive and nothing happened. Now what??

  • Brian Roth Jun 12, 2011

Well since that didn't work, and the Fedora/Linux DVD just loads the blue screen with the 2 birds and tree, what else can I try? My wife took into a shop yesterday and they verified that it's not a power issue and came up for them only as a mass storage device. They wanted to open the hard drive and take the card out to see if the files can even be recovered at all. I'm sure that's going to be quite expensive so I'd rather try to figure this out another way ourselves. Do you think I should try to contact Toshiba directly? Running out of ideas and options...

  • First is to ensure that the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\USBSTOR start value is 3
  • Ensure C:\windows\system32\drivers have SYSTEM user access especially USBSTOR.SYS.
  • If you don't have usbstor.inf in that directory or anywhere in c:\windows,download from the web.
  • Check the Device Manager
  1. Click Start > Run, in the run window type "devmgmt.msc" (without quotes).
  2. The Device manager window will open, go to the bottom and expand "Universal Serial Bus controllers"
  3. Check if "USB Mass storage" is listed there and right click >>properties, check if its working properly.
If the problem still persists, Right click USB Mass storage and uninstall. Disconnect the External Hard drive and reboot the computer. After the computer boots, plug-in the device, then when asked where to search, point to c:\windows\system32\drivers..

    Please perform check disk operation.

    1. Click Start >> Run and type "cmd" (without quotes)
    2. In the command prompt screen, type "chkdsk H: /f" (without quotes) and hit enter , H is the drive letter. if you get any other drive letter, please use it instead of H.
    3. It performs scan of the disk and fixes the failures.

    Hi Brian,

    >>Apologise for the delay! I found a way to recover data from the disk, but it kind of tedious task.

    >>First, we have to download ( ) a Linux live CD image and burn the image on DVD in ISO format.
    >>Boot the computer with the Burned Disc.
    >>Since Windows is not helping to get the data, we will have to connect the hard disk on Linux and copy the data to local disk.
    >>After data is copied. Shut down the linux and take the disk out.
    >>Boot with windows and Format the external HDD.

    >>After you have downloaded the image. It needs to be written on DVD as ISO.
    >>To burn the downloaded file as ISO, download and install "ISOburber-setuop.exe from "".
    >>Using the installed ISO Burner, provide the downloaded image path to burn on DVD.
    >>Insert the DVD and restart the computer, you may get a prompt saying "Press any key to boot from CD", so press any key at that time immediately and system will boot via DVD.

How can I find the files on my 1tb, seagate external drive?

You maybe removed the driver for the hard drive when you ran the anti virus. Those programs can do some strange things. If you click on the start, then computer. It will show all hard drives on your system. If you cannot find your files. I would think your computer does not see the external hard drive. To reinstall the driver, you would need to go to the driver's manufactures web site to down load or yours may have came with a disk. If so just run the disk. Could do a system restore , but that would be last option .

Pavilion Slimline will no longer recognise iomega 1Tb External Drive 31882100

I would buy a new hard drive enclosure. Pull the drive out of the old and into the new. If it works great, if it doesn't return the enclosure and replace the drive.

I accidentally plugged in my 19v toshiba laptop adapter to my 16v 1tb external hard drive it started up but then i plugged it out soon is it possible that the hard drive will work or is it dead, if no

The electronics in the hard drive is damaged and cannot be repaired by us mortals.
There are companies that can recover data from damaged hard drives BUT it will cost you an arm and a leg for their services.

My 1 tb wd hard drive was working fine for many months then all of a sudden was not picked up by the autoplay feature one day or could not be found on my computer file.the hard drive is found in disk...

Have you tried a different USB port? If you have and it still dose not work then I would do the following.

Select My computer
Select Manage
Select Device manager
Select the Diskdrives
Find your USB HDD esternal
Right click and select uninstall
Then scan for new hardware this will reinstall the drivers for that device.
Often the device driver or registry becomes corrupt this will 9 times out of 10 resolve the problem.
If this still dose not resolve it test your Drive on another PC to make sure its not the External HDD that is having a controller problem.

It makes noise when i use it and can not tell if it is storing anything

I would be very skeptical of storing anything on there. A noisy hard drive can often be an unhealthy one (ready to die).

My good friend had the same external hard drive (smaller size) and it died on him.

If you can, back up anything you need to another location.

Lacie 1tb ext hd. drive does not show in disk

Your external drive has 2 parts, the hard drive, which is just a normal hard drive you would find in any computer, and the usb bridge, which connects the hard drive interface (either ide or usb) to the usb or firewire or esata or whatever. Sounds like one of these are bad. Does the computer see the bridge? it should show up as a mass storage device in device manager and the safely remove usb devices dialog. If not, then get a new enclosure for the drive. These range from 25-100 dollars. If the bridge does show up, take apart the enclosure and pull the drive out and try hooking it up as a second drive in your computer. If it works there, then you need a new enclosure. If not, then you need a new drive.
