Question about Computers & Internet

1 Answer

Hello, Both of my machines were infected with the windows xp recovery virus. I managed to remove the virus manually. Now my desktop icons are hidden as well as a majority of programs, i.e. windows office isnt available when I use the start all programs. Both computers (1 is a desktop, the other is a laptop) are dell products running windows xp. I truly appreciate the help. Kids have finals around the corner.

Hi,

DELL has a awesome feature most of the time.... they ship with a recovery disk where you can set back your PC to factory.

Now if its just the icons... go and make a right click on your desktop / Properties / Desktop / Customize Desktop >>> there you can check mark some of the default windows icons.

For the Windows office, it might have corrupted and might need to be installed again...

Other icons can be brought onto the desktop by Clicking on Start >> All Programs >> then right click on the program you want the short cut on your desktop and "Send to" >> Desktop (Create Shortcut)

I hope that helped

Hello, If your laptop shows something on your desktop before and suddenly it just stop showing things then right click on your desktop, under VIEW, click on SHOW DESKTOP ICON. If this does not work then your laptop has been infected with Virus. You need to get a good anti-virus to remove the virus or format your system. Regards

We have a LINUX Suse server. We have this nhatquanglan virus on our XP machines. I can do a system restore on the XP's and all functions (task manager, device manager, etc) that were disabled by the virus...

System restore on XP is restoring individual PC stations but because you have probably shared folders on linux server you have same problem on server. Solution:
  • Remove network cable from linux server
  • Install some antivirus solution for linux server (in case you don't have one) and scan and clean server from viruses.
  • Also after you remove network cables from workstations scan and remove viruses from XP stations
  • When you finish those steps atach network cables and probably you will not have that problem
Reason for that is becausesome viruses and trojans are spreading through shared folders

I have windows xp media center. my computer has been infected with some kind of virus. i have tried to reinstall my os but apparently the recovery partition is also infected and it will not let me...

You will need a bootable antivirus solution to clean the viruses off of the machine if it's that bad, or at least that is the easiest way I know of.

Look, here is the real deal, your PC when booted to the hard drive into windows OS has what are called OS protected files. That means that even the best scanner will not remove it totally from the machine while booted in Windows OS.

When you use a bootable AV solution it runs the OS from the CD, then when you are scanning the drive for those little nasties, it can be remove, because the OS on the drive is not protecting them.

However be aware when using this method, that any files can and will be removed!!! The way I look at it, if it's a virus I don't want it on my hard drive! period! Then once the virus is removed format and reinstall the OS. Sorry to hear about your Recovery Partition!

There are ways to make these yourself, but if you don't know what your doing, relax Bart has you covered!

Check that out, that should fix you up. Yeah I know this is not a free solution, but one I know will work!

You have a virus. Do the following:
Download and run VundoFix -- http://vundofix.atribune.org/
Turn off System Restore (to remove potential infected restore points)
Restart PC.
Turn on System Restore
Download and run Ad-Aware 2008 Personal to find/remove any other nasties that might be out there.
Make certain your Anti-virus software is good and up-to-date.

Windows xp virus problem-windows will not boot up

XP Antivirus 2008 is one of the latest counterfeit antispyware that devastates the wolrd wide web. XP Antivirus 2008 usually come up after you installed a video codec that come with Trojan, malware and virus. XP Antivirus 2008 normally generates fake and misleading system popup error messages so end-users will be tricked into purchase XP Antivirus 2008.

This is one of the warnings from the net about this program.

a system restore with disks or a full reinstall may be in your future.... reboot and tap f8 and then boot to safe mode.... does that work ?

Yes it is fixable...but that depends on what you are willing to loose and what you have on hand.
Those items that are guaranteed...are still infections sitting on your computer.
I'm presuming that the "recovery" you did was the factory install of the operating system, already partitioned on the drive?
If that's the case, chances are that partition is infected as well.
What I would suggest, is to format the drive and install Windows XP if you have the disc.
Unfortunately, an infected computer.....is an infected computer. unless you are very knowledgeable and are comfortable with going into your registry and manually removing files related to those viruses...your computer will be on a never ending course of disaster, especially with 120 items.

Yes there are virus programs out there that can help, but none are 100% curable.
Do you have access to a Windows Xp Cd with a legitimate CD key....that would be your best bet...to start from scratch with a clean install....
