Try running the laptop with the battery out and just the power cord plugged in...It's very possible you have a bad battery....if it works fine with just the power cord, you will probably want to replace the battery. I think it may just be coincidence that it happened when you installed Windows 7. Your old version probably just didn't have the battery checking feature.
