Question about Audio Players & Recorders

Open Question

Harman Kardon Receiver/Integrated Amplifier hk880Vxi - The tuner makes the usual FM hiss but no digits in the display and no tuning function. I have checked the usual suspects, there seems to correct voltages where you would expect them. I have seen this model offered for sale on ebay etc with the same fault listed so hoping it is a "stock fault" - Thanks for looking, John in the N.W. UK

SOURCE: Amplifier/receiver switches off systematically after a few second of use

Sounds like a bad output channel is causing it to go into protect mode. Time to see a repair tech.

As the display lights are blown, you can't see that the unit is in the wrong 'listening' mode. USe the Listen switches to get to the input you are tring to use. The blown lights can be replaced with White or Blue 'wide beam' LED's, one leg connected in series to a 6k-ohm resistor.

SOURCE: can I conect harman Kardon avr 230 to apple tv

Yes, although it (AVR) does not support HDMI only component video.

Connect the audio to the receiver and the video directly to the TV if you have inadequate video inputs, or want to take advantage of the HDMI.

SOURCE: Harmon Kardon AVR510...no change in set up ...only sound from fm tuner

Hello. My name is Dave. The tuner is only a 2 channel device. All the other inputs, are capable of surround sound. You should have, on the back of the unit, a 5 channel, or multi-channel input, 5 female RCA jacks. If you have any unit with a variable output, you can test the surround channels directly, by plugging into any of the channels, switch the unit to mult-channel mode, with the volume down on the unit you are connecting to these jacks. See if it now works. If is does, you have issues with the DSP board. If you still don't, you may have amplifiers bad. Multiple amplifiers bad would be highly unlikely.

Only hissing sound from 990 Vxi tuner

I remember a similar problem with these back when I repaired them. It has something to do with the I.F. section of the AM/FM tuner section and will require a HK service visit. Find a local HK dealer who's been selling them "forever" and ask if they have a bench tech who they would recommend for the repair. I just saw one of these on Ebay for $25.00 so I wouldn't spend much to have it fixed.

Hi, I have a Harman Kardon AVR 300 that I picked up at a local sale. When I power it on, it switches fine to each input except the AM/FM tuner (the preset, tuning, & tuner mode buttons don't seem to...

AC (alternate current) receivers have amplifiers in them. Those amplifiers have capacitors in there. What the do is store massive amounts of electrons. What that means is if you touch one it will electrocute you. I have to recommend you take it to a tech to have this addressed. This is purely for your safety.

Hello Sir, Hi, you may try the following
  1. try cleaning the switches
  2. if this does no solve the problem, its the selector circuit. this may be digital, so you need to search the IC that selects the FM mode both with tuning. this is fair complicated.
  3. buy a cheap separate FM tuner, run it on auxiliary input.

My harman kardon avr 110 will not play thru the fm. what do I need to hook up to make it work?

It's a RECEIVER, meaning the FM tuner is built-in. That's the only source you don't have to 'hook up'. But you DO have to make sure NO OTHER source is selected.

You don't say if it actually TUNES a station or not. Try an antenna.

No sound regardless of input. front panel lights up and functions as per inputs however also noticed pwr supply fan and internal heat sink fan do NOT turn on. Any debugging tips appreciated! Thank You...

The power supply has to be on to some extent or it wouldn't light up.

Does it tune FM? That would indicate some life.

No sound? Is it Muted or a tape Monitor selected inadvertently?

Processor Reset

In the rare case where the unit's operation or the displays seem abnormal, the cause may involve the erratic

operation of the system's memory or microprocessor.

To correct this problem, first unplug the unit from the AC wall outlet and wait at least three minutes. After the

pause, reconnect the AC power cord and check the unit's operation. If the system still malfunctions, a system

reset may clear the problem.

To clear the AVR 335's entire system memory including tuner presets, output level settings, delay times and

speaker configuration data, press and hold the Tone Mode Button (5) buttons for three seconds. The unit

will turn on automatically.

NOTE: Resetting the processor will erase any configuration settings you have made for speakers, output

levels, surround modes and digital input assignments, as well as the tuner presets. The unit will be returned

to the factory presets, and all settings for these items must be reentered.

If the system is still operating incorrectly, there may have been an electronic discharge or severe AC line

interference that has corrupted the memory or microprocessor.

If these steps do not solve the problem, consult an authorized Harman Kardon service center.

No audio from Harman Kardon AVR 7000

Incorrect polarity between receiver and speaker will not damage receiver however unmatched impedance speakers can damage amplifier section of receiver.
Please check connection cables in receiver and if receiver does not shut off in protection mode then it could be connection cable broken or some dry / cold solder joints on circuit boards in receiver.
Re-soldering of cold solder joints is job of qualified tech.

No sound,no video, front panel display will display.harman kardon

Check your audio settings on the main menu of the receiver. The audio input should be set to "auto" Next, make sure you don't have the unit in "6 channel input" mode or "direct" mode. This is usually a small button on the front panel. If you check all this and you still have a problem, post a comment and I will help you troubleshoot some more. Hope this helps

My Harman Kardon receiver ( AVR 225) displays "protect" and shuts off when I try to play anything (tape, CD, FM/AM). I unplugged receiver and reset it several times. The sam "protect" comes again.

I used the live chat and the problem was resolved.
Usually the problem are strands of speaker wires which cause shorting and protection shuts off the receiver in order to prevent damage. There was one speaker that I repositioned recently which was causing shorting. I twisted the wires and tightened them in place and my receiver has been working w/o a glitch. I was lucky that I did not have to check all the wire strands on the receiver and all the speakers.
Problem solved and I learned valuable lesson.
