Try other usb port, or other computer and see whether the hdd is detected. If still not, try to go to device manager ( http://www.computerhope.com/issues/ch000833.htm ), and then assign a drive letter to the hdd. After that, try to access it from Computer, if not able to access it, format it (use quick format) and then use this program to recover your files.

Hey guy,
If it shows up in 'My Computer' as a drive letter(like E: drive) but you can't access it,I would first try to recover the data on it with a data recovery program to avoid losing them.
I have succeed with Tenorshare Data Recovery. It can recover data after deeply scanning your hard drive to look for lost data due to drives crash and drive 'not recognized' issues.
You can get it here: http://www.any-data-recovery.com/index.htm
Then you can format it to check out whether it can be fixed.
If it fails, you will have to go to a recovery office but let's hope not because it will cost you a lot of money and whether they can recover the data or not is not guarantee.
Good Luck!
And this article will help.

Try "Kernel for FAT and NTFS" data recovery software to recover data, You can get it from http://www.windowsdatarecovery.com/ and follow the steps :
1. Install the software on your system.
2. Install ur hard disk as external drive to that system.
3. select the drive(usually G or H for External drive) , click Start. Now the scanning process will

start to search the deleted files. After a while you will then get a list of recoverable files.
4. Press Recover to perform full recovery.

Drive lights up but cannot see it on computer

The drive may most likely be dead. You can use a program like recuva to see files but you would need to see the drive. To see the drive you may have to take it out of its outer layer and connect the drive to a sata cable within the computer. The computer may recognize it that way. Now if that seems to difficult i recommend taking it to a computer repair shop where they can pull the data off for you or contacting the manufacturer and maybe the product is still under warranty.

It is entirely possible that your external hard drive is failing. I would recommend downloading Seatools for Windows (link below) and run extended hard drive test on it. Chances are if it is failing, it still recognizes within the system, but it is not readable enough for windows to display it and allow you to browse.

did you change operating systems? windows doesnt recognize EXT2 formats there may be an issue there.

was the other drive part of a raid array before the retooling? if it was part of a raid array you may need to rebuild the array before accessing the files.

next insure there are no special drivers required to access the drives nothing wierd like scsi interface or PCI card controller?

if there is no wierd issues try useing the setup disk as a boot disk drop to DOS and access the drive that way.

Have you tried running a search from your start menu (in Windows XP, Vista)? If not, go there and then use the drop down line at the top of the window. It should register what drive is plugged into or hooked up to your computer.

How do you install a fantom drive(titanium 2 firewire usb2.0.)or how do i psave programs to it.

You don't mention what kind of OS you're using - but either Windows, or OS X should see your drive regardless.

Before use:

Windows: Format the drive with NTFS.
Mac: Finder should pop up and ask you if you want to initalize the drive, you can choose 'yes' and continue.

Drive not appearing

You formatted, but did you create a Partition? Go back to Disk Management and create a Partition on the drive. You should be able to now see it in "My Computer."

Fantom Drive problem

Try connecting it to a Windows XP Pro pc. Right click on "My Computer", left click on "Manage". Once the new management console opens, left click on "Disk Management". If the USB drive is recognized by the pc, you will be able to right click on it, and select "Delete Partition". WARNING: YOU ARE DELETING EVERYTHING ON THE DRIVE! Once it's done, right click on the drive again, and select "Create New Partition". Proceed thru the wizard that pops up, and format it. You will have a choice of using FAT32, but, if the partition is larger than 32 GB, it will fail (it's a Windoze limitation), so NTFS is your only choice, unless you use a 3rd party utility, Win98 (supports huge FAT32 partitions, 4 TB, I think), or Linux.(preferred). Good Luck, hopefully everything will work out fine. T-Power
