The usual things to check for are the cables (try different cables), or try a different usb socket. It might even be dust. So try cleaning both your computer and external hard drive. Perform a chkdsk on the hdd and see if that helps. i.e

open up the cmd prompt (on XP select RUN from start menu and type cmd)

from there type "chkdsk X: /f" no quotes and replace X with whatever drive it is.

It should perform a scan and once complete should work just like new! I hope anyway. But it may also give you errors on the HDD itself. The final solution is to reformat your external hard drive and replace your music. Sorry I know its a bit drastic.

I/O error means that computer is having difficulty in reading and writing the data from that hard drive it could be because of some software or hardware malfunction.
Try using Chkdsk. If it doesnt work I am afraid you'll lose it so just try to recover the data.

I have the Maxtor OneTouch 4 (750GB) external drive. Somehow I've lost my software that came with this drive. How can I purchase just the disc I need?

Hello,

No need to purchase the software, it's available free from the Seagate website. Seagate recently bought out/merged with Maxtor and has taken over support. Got to:

http://www.seagate.com/www/en-us/support/downloads/

Ckick on Maxtor External Drives then click on One Touch 4 Family.

Click on download Software link below the name of the version you have One Touch 4/Mini/Plus and the software will download. You can just install it or you can save a copy to burn to disk and then intall from the saved copy.

Hope this helps FixYa,

Chris

Itunes messed up my external hardrive

I doubt that iTunes really moved/reorganized files on your computer.

iTunest may have created its own "Table Of Contents", presenting a "view" of all your files.

Open "My Computer" and open your external hard-drive.
The files should be in "your" order.

Open "My Documents". Open "My Music".
The files should be in "your" order.

If iTunes really did "reorganize" your files, there's no way to "go back", because "Windows System Restore" does not automatically created time-stamped backups of your 'My Documents' folder (nor of any external disk-drive -- where would it put that much data???).

Hard drive with loose usb connection

Hi there. This would be an actctual manufacturing fault. I would strongly suggest that you copy/backup all the files you want to keep, from that hard drive, to another one. Then, if it's still under Warranty from either the shop where you bought it, or still under warranty from Seagate themselves, you can send it back to be fixed, or get a replacement. If it's not under warranty, then you could always take the external case off the hard drive and see if it's something you could repair yourself. Either way, as I said, I would still strongly suggest you copy/backup any files that you want to keep.

Help!

You have not yet formatted the drive to work with you MAC. You will need to use your MAC's Disk Utility to format the drive in order to write to the drive, but be aware that formatting will erase everything already on the external drive, so back up anything on the drive you want to keep first.
