Question about Printers & Copiers

HP Photo Printer - "print cradle is stuck" I have a one year old who loves the printer. He's pulled some sort of transparent strip out and I can't figure out where it goes. It's still connected on the right side of the printer, but not the left. I see where it should be connected, but I don't know what to thread it through, if anything.

It is called encodder strip which helps the printer to print.the whole allignment system works on it.you have to open the top cover of your printer by removing the screws.fitting the strip is just a job of 10 seconds, but opening the top cover is bit hard.

Ink cartridge will not reset correctly. stays at left side of printer, will not set to center or right hand side. when it sets to the left, it makes a loud sqeaking/grinding noise. ?????????

Ok.. This is the very common problem which occur in HP printers... The most probable reason is scratches on head-guide-strip (that is a transparent, thick, plastic film passing through cradle ). This strip guides the cradle and cartridges about their location. Scratches on it cause the cradle misguided... and thus the cradle sounds on false arrivals of left or right end.
the only and the safest remedy is to take it to the service centre and get the strip changed.. that is not much costly.

My 2 year-old pulled a thin transparent plastic strip out of our dell photo 944 printer, and now it no longer works. The plastic strip appears to be the only thing he did. Where does it go, and how do I...

The plastic strip you are referring to is the mechanisim to move the cartridge carrier back and forth, you may need to take it to a certified technician to see if it can be replaced or if not damaged put back into the printer.

Thin strip pulled out of printer

if it's kinda skinny and has dots end to end, it is a critical peice of your printer, the machine will never print without it and your best off to replace the machine because they are pretty difficult to put back in on most machines.

I need step by step instructions as far as how to change cartridges in hp deskjet 5440 printer

[This is from HP.com]

Introduction This document explains the basics of installing or replacing the print cartridges. It is for a 5940 which is the same printer design, yours may look a bit different but I copied this from HP at the section for your printer so follow the instructions and you should be okay.
Insert the print cartridges
NOTE: The printer shown below is the HP Deskjet 5940 series printer. Your printer might look slightly different.
  1. Turn the printer on. The cartridge cradle will not move if the power is not on.
  2. Open the printer cover. Figure 1: Open the cover c00393707.gif
  3. Wait until the print cartridge cradle moves to the right side of the printer and is idle and quiet.
  4. If you are replacing a print cartridge, press down on the print cartridge to be replaced, and then slide it out of the print cartridge cradle. If you are installing print cartridges for the first time, go to the next step.
  5. Remove the new print cartridge from its packaging and carefully remove the plastic tape. Hold the print cartridge so that the copper strips are on the bottom and facing toward the printer. Figure 2: Remove tape c00393708.gif 1 - Protective tape CAUTION: Do not touch the print cartridge ink nozzles or copper contacts. Touching these parts will result in clogs, ink failure, and bad electrical connections. Do not remove the copper strips. They are required electrical contacts.
  6. Slide the print cartridge at a slight upward angle into the cradle until the cartridge snaps into place. Figure 3: Install the print cartridge c00393709.gif
  7. Repeat steps 3-4 for the remaining print cartridge.
  8. Close the printer cover. The printer automatically prints a calibration page.

The print cartridge cradle cannot move.

"The print cartridge cradle cannot move."
I fixed this problem by disconnecting the power cord from the power-strip and connecting it directly into the wall. My printer was not getting enough voltage from the power-strip. I hope this helps.

Detacted drive strip

that sounds like the indexing strip for the print head.

It may be accesible when you open the printer to replace ink carts. there will be a pin or hook on either side of the printer and you should see a slot under the print head that the strip passes thru.

the L on the strip is for LEFT this end goes to left side and there is usually a spring to keep it under tension on one end

IF this strip is damaged the print head will not move correctly and therefore not print correctly

There seems to be a problem with the cradle not "lifting" itself up and over what appears to be some sort of guide. Rock the cradle gently back by hand (it will only move a few millimeters) and move it all the way to the right into its bay. Cycle the printer power and it should be fine.

Mechanism Error - Print Cradle won't move! - HP 5650

This "plastic strip" is called the "carriage encoder strip". This strip dictates the timing of the carriage assembly. If the end slots aren't broken, you can re-attach it. Otherwise, you'll need to replace it. They are about $10.
