When a hard drive whether internal or external makes a clicking sound and does not work, then this is known as "the click of death".
This hard disk is faulty and cannot be fixed. There are companies that can recover data from faulty hard drives BUT it will cost you an arm and a leg for their services.

Clicking sound means the platters inside of the hard drive are bad. They are touching each other which is bad. Only option is to replace the external hard drive.

Is it formatted as NTFS? What OS on the PC? What program did you download since it should not be required?

Sounds like the drive is broken or the cable. Does the power light on the drive light up?

I think that your disk-drive is "SLIGHTLY" dead. :-(

Disassemble the enclosure.

Get the model-number and serial-number from the label on the disk-drive.

Access Maxtor's web-site, and check the warranty-status of the disk.

If the warranty still is valid, Maxtor will replace the disk-drive, at minimal cost to you.

If the warranty has ended, buy a new, compatible, disk-drive, and install it into the enclosure, to "reconstitute" your external storage-device.

I have a Sony VGN-FZ240E that will start up and go to the VAIO screen and then it goes to the black screen with a flashing spacer bar. It also makes a loud squeal and a soft clicking noise. Can you help?

With a loud squeal, it is either your hard drive eating itself up or a fan trying to spin. If it sounds like a pretty songbird caught in a blender, it's probably your hard drive. If it sounds like your younger brother trying to make the most annoying sound in the world, it's probably your fan. To check you could blow compressed air into the fan ports to see if it dislodges a lot of dust. I'm guessing that it's your hard drive though because it is accompanied by the clicking which may be your hard drive trying to reset itself, but having a physical problem. Don't worry, after a few minutes it usually fails completely and you won't have to listen to that noise any more. Maybe take the hard drive out and put it in an external case and see if another computer can read it. Or go on Craigslist and find someone to fix it for you for $40.

Odd clicking noise...

That clicking sounds if ever loud enough is one annoying symptoms of failed disc. When it accidentally drop the reader may come off the disc. It sad to say but you may consider to change your hard disc.

My computer makes a loud noise, how can I fix this problem please?

there are a limited number of things that could be making noises. take off the cover of your computer and listen close when you start it. A fan would be the first thing i'de suspect. check them all- cpu fan- motherboard fan-videocard fan- powersupply fan.
I would also listen to the powersupply (rear top of computer)
only things left to check that could be making noise are the cd/dvd rom, floppy drive (both wont run without a disk in them) and your hard drive which would be the last one to make noise. the hard drive runs everytime your computer moves data, if it is getting loud, i would suggest backing up important files and shopping for a new one. Post again here if I can be of further assistance.
Regards..

Western digital 500gb external hard drive ticking noise- Help !!!

There is a number of data recovery solutions online. Just google it. I would recommend one that sends out a static sensitive bag for transportation. But the customer service rep you spoke with, is probably right. The actuator arm has probably locked up and is failing to move back and forth reading and writing to the platters. Good luck and i feel for you with it being your new born on the hard drive.

External hard drive makes sound like second hand watch

You have two motors in a hard drive. The spindle motor that spins the platters and a head position motor. In your case the heads can't tell where the tracks are, so they keep swinging, until they hit the stop. This gets noticed, the controller retracts the heads all the way to the center, and it tries again. What you are hearing is the heads hitting the stop that keeps them from moving off the platters completely. Your drive is almost certainly toast. If the data is really important, you can send it to a disk recovery place, who will charge you lots of money, and send back the data on CD. If it's not, you buy a new drive.
