Obviously the defrost cycle is not working. You will have to find the defrost timer and see if it is working. Also, behind the plate (probably the rear wall inside) there is a defrost heater and a termination thermostat. you need to check both for continuity, but the thermostat will only show continuity if it is still covered with ice; at about 50 degrees it will "open".

The Refrigerator's Freezer is not working but the fridge is, what is wrong?

You probably have one compressor that cools the freezer section and the refrigerator section. Usually the freezer gets cooled directly with the cooling coils. A fan blows cool air to the refrigerator section. The air flow to the refrigerator may be modulated with some time of "air door". What you have written says to me, is that the fans and air doors are working but there is enough cold for the refrigerator but not enough for the freezer.

Here is what I would do:
  1. Put a thermometer in the refrigerator and in the freezer.
  2. Be sure the coils underneath or behind the refrigerator are clean. If they are very dirty, clean them.
  3. Keep the doors shut for at least 12 hours and then read the thermometers and write down the temperatures.
  4. Freezer temperature
    1. If the freezer has started freezing again, you fixed it by cleaning the coils
    2. .If the freezer temperature is between 0 deg F and 32 deg F, consider putting the food in a cooler and packing in some dry ice to try and save it.
    3. If the freezer is warmer than 32 deg f, throw away the food.
    4. Doctors and hospitals are pretty expensive. I would throw away the food no matter what the thermometer read.
  5. Look inside the freezer at the cooling coils. See if they are ice coated or not.
    1. If the freezer is above 0 deg F, and the coils are ice covered, the defrost control is not working. Unplug the refrigerator for 12 hours and let the ice melt. (Keep the doors shut.) Then, plug in the refrigerator for 12 hours and check the temperature like in step 3.
    2. If the freezer is above 0 deg F, and the coils are NOT ice covered, the compressor is not working.
  6. Call the service technician. When she comes out show her the temperatures and tell her what you found out about the ice on the coils.
Good luck

Frigidaire refrigerator/freezer side by side--compressor keeps running

Most problems with side by sides frosting up is due to failure of the defrost heater in the bottom of the freezer section behind the panel inside.

A layer of ice keeps forming in the bottom of the freezer. can chip it out and a new layer will start forming by the next day. also has a lot of frost as well. thuoght was the seal and have attempted to...

Top of Form

If there is no cooling at all on the fridge section but the freezer works then it is confirmed that the compressor and gas pressure is OK. Now shut off the fridge and leave it powered off while you clean and check the evaporator for frost. If frost is seen it is a good indication as the compressor is working with sufficient gas within.
Now after about 6 hours plug in the fridge to start. Observe cooling to happen in about one hour and ice to from under three hours.
Earlier make sure that the thermostat was set to normal mode for freezer and fridge.
However if ice forms in the freezer then observe the fridge for about 24 hours for cooling to continue and the fridge to cut off . If not the auto defrost timer, or the thermostat must be checked. Frost formation without defrosting could block the air flow and so shut the air passage to the fridge. Also the blower fan must work and if this is not working then the fan can be faulty. Also a fault on the control unit is a suspect to non functioning of any one of these components.
If defrost timer works but frost keeps forming check while the compressor shuts if the heaters are working, check continuity of the heaters.
So try this test using a multi-meter on the defrost timer and the thermostat and make your observations so that we come to the solution.

The freezer is working fine but the refrigerator part is warm on the coldest setting and the door has been shut for more than 8 hours.

Hi, I have seen this a lot in my 13 years in maintenance work, the most likely problem is ice build up in back of freezer behind the plastic liner. The drian tub freezes over and when the frig goes into defrost cycle the melted ice has know place to go and covers the air holes that blows into frig to keep it cool. You my have noticed water in the bottom of frig. You will have to either take freezer apart inside and remove ice and thaw out drain tube or unplug frig to thaw it out.

My freezer is cold but not enough to keep food frozen. everything is thawing out

Check below down by the compressor. Remove the cobwebs and lint. The motor down there must be running when the compressor is. Check the relay on the compressor it may be going south. If all of that is good then open the access panel inside the freezer and look for ice blockage due to failed defrost. Make sure te fan inside is running. It should be working if the compressor is working.

My Frigidaire upright freezer is only 4 years old & isn't working

freezers have safety devices to protect themselves. The compressor has an internal overload to keep it from overheating. some have external reset buttons and some do not. either way the cause must be corrected. if the freezer was low on refrigerant you would see signs of oil near the coils, tubing, or compressor. If there is no leak, it overheats when there is airflow restrictions(dirty coils) or a fan has stopped working. only a few screws keep you from seeing all there is to see. If it is clean and the fan is running, then the compressor may just be the culprit

Ice build up on coil inside freezer

it can be two things the refrgerator probably has a small refrigerant leak therefore it ices up, or the defrosting heater on the begining of the coil is faulty.

Sounds like an internal mounting spring for the compressor. Only solution is replacing the compressor. However the compressor can run in this condition for years. Replacement compressors only have a one year warranty. A new refrigerator comes with a five year warranty.

Not cooling or freezing

When the compressor is running, both the fan inside the freezer and the fan down by the compressor should be running. If OK, look for frost on the back wall of the freezer, indicating a probable defrost heater failure. If yes, remove back metal cover in freezer, defrost with hair blower, replace defrost heater (the thing at the bottom of the freezer coils with two wires going to it)
If no to these, send me an "ask me" follow up question.
