Question about Midland WR-100 Weather/RDS Radio

Just bought a Midland 100B Weather Radio. I programmed the channel and SAME Set. I am not receiving any alerts. We are having an alert right now, but it is not displaying the LEDs or the voice/siren is not going off. I will probably return the radio.

You just purchased a Midland WR-100B All-Hazards Weather Radio. You have all the information programmed correctly in it and you are still not receiving any alerts. First of all, log on to this website and check to make sure that the transmitter tower in your area is still working (this means your county does not have a DEGRADED remark in its row).

When you get to the website, select your state and you will see a list of all the counties in your state. Find your county and locate the REMARKS column. If your county has a remark stating "OUT OF SERVICE" or "DEGRADED", it means the tower transmitting broadcasts for your state is not working due to technical problems or recent severe weather conditions. If your county doesn't have one of these remarks beside it, then the reason why you are not receiving any alerts on your radio is because the National Weather Service has special criteria that a storm has to meet in order for them to alert NOAA Weather Radio owners "In the middle of the night or while doing daily activities". To translate that for you, they don't want to disturb anyone by sending alerts for storms that are not "life threatening" or going to cause severe damage. NWR always runs Required Weekly Testing every Wednesday starting from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM. If you are able to, check the radio then. I have midland wr-100 weather radio. radio is programed with right codes and channel numbers all i get is a high pitch tone coming out of the speaker

The problem is that you are hearing a high pitch tone coming from the speaker. First check to make sure the weather mode is on. To do this, switch the radio to the right side and make sure the Weather Radio On/Off switch is switched to On. You should also check the alarm to make sure it's not on and set. If the alarm is on, turn it off. Your alert type may also be a cause for this. If your alert type is set on TONE, try changing it to DISPLAY or VOICE. Reply back if you still receive problems. How do i program the radio to only give audio alerts for the county in whitch i reside? (sarpy county in nebraska


1. Turn switch on side of radio to "ON".
2. Press "MENU".
3. Press "UP" arrow until "CHANNEL" is displayed.
4. Press "SELECT".
5. Press "UP" arrow until you hear the broadcast of your station.
6. Press "SELECT" to save station selection.
7. Press "MENU" to close menu mode.
To turn Weather/Hazard broadcast on again, press "WEATHER/SNOOZE".

Note you will hear only static on the channels not received in your area.
(FYI - channels are listed 1-7 on the left, and corresponding frequency numbers are displayed on the right side of display.)

Hi! I've been under 4 different tornado warnings today, and my weather radio hasnt given me one alert. I just put new batteries in it, and checked to make sure I'm on the right channel and the right...


Do you hear a broadcast when you hit the Weather/Snooze button? Is the transmitter that you have programmed broadcasting? NWS does have downtime at the various transmitters and these will be listed at weather.gov. (Click on the map for your region and look at the links in the News of the Day section.) If the signal is being broadcast, try changing where you have the radio placed until you hear the broadcast come through clearly. With one weather radio, I found that I had a better chance of getting the NWS alerts from a different tower than the one listed for my county. My location is closer to this other transmitter. See http://www.weather.gov/nwr/Maps/ for where the transmitters are located in various states. Click on your state for your local map. Check the map for adjacent states if you are near a state border.

Do you have an external antenna? Check that it is properly connected. If not, consider adding one positioned to get a better signal for the nearest transmitter to your location. (With an external antenna, we can get one of several transmitters on that weather radio. This means that we can easily switch when the best transmitter is down, as well.) See www.midlandradio.com to see the antenna that they recommend - which should be placed in a window. This is the 18-259W VHF Through-glass antenna.

Has your radio been picking up the weekly and monthly tests before this? These only give a text message not an alert tone with this Weather Radio. The alert will reset within 6 hours.

Did you set the alarm to Display alerts? This is the silent alarm mode - Tone or Voice would give an audible alert. Check this by pressing Menu then use the Up arrow until you see Alt Type. Press Select and use the Up arrow and then scroll through the options. Press Select to set your choice and then press Menu to exit the menu. Check the volume setting if you have the alarm set for tone or voice.

I hope one of these items help. Otherwise, contact Midland for support. They charge $45 to fix out of warranty weather radios plus a $7.50 shipping and handling charge for any repair. (btw, my household had one weather radio that continuously would lose the ability to hear the test alerts even when placed in a spot that usually got the best reception for the unit. Since that one also did not respond to S.A.M.E. codes properly, we replaced it and put it in our workshop where the intermittent signal loss wouldn't always be critical. Without an external antenna, positioning the radio for best signal took walking around the house many times. Even with the external antenna, it took a while to find the best placement for the antenna.)

With this radio receiver you have to set the county or counties code for the alert system to work. This encoded tones turn the radio to receive the alert signals.

Program the Midland 74-109 Weather Radio
a) Turn unit on. Extend the antenna. Adjust volume up slowly; Do you hear anything? If not, try replacing the 9 volt battery with a fresh one, in the accessible battery compartment underneath the unit. Repeat above steps.
b) If no sound is heard, turn unit over and look for "WEATHER" slide switch on bottom. With unit on & volume adjusted to comfortable hearing level, slowly slide switch down (or up) through various frequencies [1)162.550, 2) 162.400, 3) 162.475, 4) 162.425, 5) 162.450, 6) 162.500, 7) 162.525] until voice transmissions are heard. This should be the closest National Weather Service (NWS) broadcast for your area. Check the NWS website at http://www.nws.noaa.gov/nwr/nwrbro.htm for your state, click on the state name, and look for the site name or site location nearest you. The frequency for that site should be the strongest, and appropriate for your area.
c) You can set the alert tone, for special weather alert broadcasts, on the bottom of the unit on the slide switch marked "ALERT". Set the switch to the desired type of alert: 1) LED [LED on top of unit (marked ALERT) lights up when alert is broadcast-no siren tone/alarm is heard] 2) LED & ALARM [LED lights up and alarm/ siren tone is heard] 3) VOICE [LED on top of unit lights up and voice broadcast is heard, only; no siren tone/alarm is heard].
d) Be sure to press the "ALERT" button on top of the unit and leave the volume at a comfortable listening level to hear weather alerts for your area (Alert LED on top of unit lights up to show Alert function is active). You can test the present volume level by pressing the "TEST" button. Be sure to press the "ALERT" button again after listening to the volume level to re-set the Alert function. You can listen to weather broadcasts anytime, by pressing the "WEATHER" button. After listening, be sure to re-press the "ALERT" button to reset the Alert function.
e) 9 volt battery life should last about 6 to 7 months, depending on how much unit is used an number of alerts received. Replace battery every 6 months, or when you replace your smoke alarm battery, or at beginning and end of daylight savings time. A 12 volt AC adapter to replace the battery, can be used. One should have been supplied with unit. If not, a replacement can be found at Radio Shack.
f) This should complete your Midland Weather Alert Radio Model 74-109 programming.
