Question about Iomega Prestige 1 TB USB 20 Hard Drive

2 Answers

My PC recognizes my hard drive but it's making a ticking sound & it won't re-format. I'm running Win7 & have tried both reformat settings-NTFS and exFAT but there is not action at all. It was dropped from about a 2 feet on a hard wood floor while running. Is it dead-or is their hope?

If the mechanism is making a sound then your hard disk is broken for sure. there are companies that can try to save your data but they are very expensive. www.werecoverdata.com

I'm sorry to hear that your hard drive is having trouble. Based on your description of the "ticking sound" and the fact that the drive was dropped, the drive is probably physically damaged. Unfortunately, this means that your drive is failing in a way that isn't fixable; it will have to be replaced.

Have recently had to add windows 7 to my PC (losing everything) but have laptop using XP. When I plug buffalo ministation into PC it wants to format but I'll lose everything on harddrive won't

click start control panel administrate tools computer management disk management right click on your drive select properties click tools you should see click check now click start two boxes

automatically fix files and scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors place then a tick in one box then select check now start then after its finished return and tick the other box you should not

do anything while the chkdsk utility is in progress any input may damage this drive
i have found the best results ticking in one box the returning after it has finished then ticking the other box

it might take some time depending on the size of your disk but be patient

hope it helps

How do you unlock the hard drive. I used it on my pc and now it won't let me add anything to it on a mac.

The windows PCs and MACs have different file system. That's why your MAC cannot recognize your hard drive.
In this case, you need to reformat it. there are a couple of possible solutions:
1. you can reformat the drive into FAT32 which should be readable for both windows and mac.
1a. as soon as you reformat it into fat32, you can use the Disk Utility on the mac to make 2 partitions and format one in NTFS (windows) and the other one in HFS+ (MAC).
2. you can buy a sofware called MacDrive and use that.
OR
3. you can use MacFuse, which is a recently developed free software that lets your MAC read windows drives.

good luck.

How was the drive formated? If it was formated as NTFS, OSX can only read - it won't write.

If you're going to be using it on your Mac, then you should repartition/reformat it in your disk utility. That way you will get better performance out of it.

if it wants to reformatted it's not fried likely. run scandisk first to determine actual damage and look for some recovery softwares. video and picture recovery specific ones preferrably if you wish the pictures most of all.

does it make a ticking noise? if so, only one chance i know of. vacume seal it and put it into a freezer. this will make the metal inside contract and perhaps pull the arm back onto the disk inside. make sure when you take it out that the room is warm and dry. not humid! you won't have much time when you plug it in, work fast.

For the MAC to see a PC formatted hard drive, format the hard drive using the PC but format the hard drive in FAT32 not NTFS.
You will then able to transfer files between the PC and the MAC.
The MAC will copy file to the hard drive in PC file format.
