RF Remote Problem

I am having a problem with a KVH M3 Marine Satelite Receiver. The RF Remote works sometimes but only within a range of around 6 feet. Very frustrating. It should work no problem through the one wall that the signal needs to go through. The RF antenna is outside of the cabinet that the receiver is mounted in, but the remote still won't work from more than 6 feet away. I've tried new batteries and also purchased an IR to RF convertor. but can't use it because the satelite receiver doesn't even have an IR sensor on it. Any ideas?

The satelite receiver is specifically designed for marine use, so it should be able to handle all of the other electronic interferences. Has anyone dealt with this problem before. Bad RF transceiver? Bad remote?

I'll try a universal remote to try to nail down the problem. I'll have to find the right RF frequency to match the transceivers frequency...I'll let you know

For added convenience, the TracVision M3's remotecontrol uses an RF signal, rather than the IR signal standard to homereceivers, allowing the remote control to change channels even if thereceiver is safely and stylishly tucked away in a cabinet or stateroomcloset.

Hi,

May I offer an alternative view...

It is not that the KVH's RF remote receiver is affected by external interference, it is a limitation of the RF Power output of the remote control so as not to cause interference. The primary reason KVH opted for an RF type remote is to allow use even when the receiver is inside a cabinet. I was made to understand that a competitor, SeaTel, makes use of combo IR/RF on some of their versions.

A clarifying questions pls, your post "The RF antenna is outside of the cabinet", are you referring to the dome antenna (satellite receiver) or a small antenna for the remote receiver? If it were for the remote receiver, a possible workaround is to install a reflector behind the antenna so as to improve its forward gain (db) and therefore increase receiving range.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards. Thank you for using FixYa.

The thing here is you cant really say its a bad transceiver or remote since it works. Would it be possible for you to use a universal remote instead of the one that you are using so you might have a point of comparison?

On r15s, for rf, you need an antenna on the remote f-connector. I usually took coax with one connector on it and the other end strip 6 - 10 off with only center conductor exposed. The rf board is on the same board as the modem. Not the front panel board. Frequency is roughly 413 - 417mhz. All coded by the last 6 of rid number.

Can not locate satellite continues to search

There are few possible reasons.
Antenna can't "see" satellite.
Wrong data programmed.
Wrong skew angle.
Damaged RF board.
If you make log-file it will be much easy to understand your problem.

Codes for many of our TVs can be found at InsigniaProducts.com. For the Blu-ray player, we recommend using your universal remote's scan or learning feature.

What is the best marine satellite system

Intellian for ease of installation and leading edge technology. KVH seems built better, but the Korean Intellian i2 is really reliable and cheap! Plus it is a really easy install, especially for HD.

My KVH M3 will not lock on to a satellite, when I run anttena diagnostics everthing is OK except RF Low: 500 and I do not know what this means

RF low means low signal from dish. Maybe blocked satellite, maybe poorly crimped coax, maybe bad sat receiver. Most likely, bad coax crimp!

Not tracking satalite.

If you can hear the dish actually serching when it says "searching", there is a good possibility that you have a bad LNB on the dish. Unfortunately, this is not the only thing that can cause the problem. Your best bet is to call KVH @ 4018473327. Make sure you are on the boat when you call and they will run you through all of the programming checks to narrow down your issue. Good luck.

Connect the supplied anttena on the reciever. Once you have done that, then:

1. dtv symbol device
2. press and hold MUTE & SELECT for two blinks
3. enter 9 6 1
4. press CH UP
5. enter the last 6 digits of the Receiver ID #, found on a sticker in the access card compartment
6. press SELECT

Now the receiver will accept both IR and RF, but the directv device on the RC32RF remote will only emit RF signals. The av1, av2, and tv are all still IR only.

IR frequency determination

The remote could be using RF, which is why your Niles equipment cannot handle it. There is no way to duplicate the RF or convert it to an IR signal.

If the remote is using IR, make sure the batteries are full and the light is low when you are learning the codes with tne Niles equpment. There is no way if it's IR that the freq is > 100.
