Question about MotorGuide FW71 FB Freshwater Series Foot-Control Fishing Trolling Motor

3 Answers

I have a motorguide fw71fb trolling motor. Speed 1 and Speed 2 quit working but 3, 4 & 5 work fine. I looked in the manual and it said to check the wiring in the top unit. All looks fine. I read on this site that the lower unit may need cleaning but it's a little tricky putting it all back together. I'd like to have a better specs manual before I take it apart. Please advise. Kelly

All they had was the operator's manual. I'd like to find a schematic of the lower unit or other recommendations as to why only Speeds 3, 4, and 5 will work properly.

    Thanks

I did manage to find a diagram on this site, others want to charge for the service manuals
The bottom is basically all motor, the top part with the wiring is where all the selections take place. There may be something wrapped around the shaft and to get to it, the prop just slides off the shaft after you remove the retainer. Taking off the back part will get you to some bearings that might need lubricated but that is usuall not the case in these. These problems usually stem from a bad switch or fouled prop shaft. When you get to this site simply go down to your model number and select it for the diagram

Why does my motor guide 50 trolling motor fuse

It depends on how much current the trolling motor is supposed to draw when set to 5. If it's more than 40 amps, then you need a larger breaker. If it isn't more than 40 amps, then your current 40 amp breaker is weak and needs to be replaced.

The motor should work without the circuit breaker for a test. The breaker is a safety device to protect the motor and wires if something malfunctions.

Motorguide Trolling motor has low thrust in all five speeds

I have a 4 speed with 48 lbs of thrust. On mine, 1 through 3 will move me out pretty well, however, 4th is similar to an overdrive gear in a car or truck and is meant more for maintaining a speed with less draw on the amps.

I certainly wouldn't want to take off with it. I suspect it is the same with your 5 speed. The boat needs to be up to speed and then those two gears will maintain it, with 5th being optimal as far as low draw in amperage.
