Hi there,
I would take it back If it's still under warranty a get another one.If that's not an option you can call

Computers: (800) 457-7777 (toll-free) or (949) 859-4273 I did a factory install with my Satellite but I don't remember how but it had something to do with holding zero down when I turned it off or on.The first thing I do is make a back up copy.Takes 3 DVDs and you can just put them in and laptop is good as new.You will lose any thing that you had added so save anything you want on CDs.

I always add this for your information. If this is not the solution that you are looking for please re post because when we pick a question to answer FixYa takes it out of the questions.

Restore Original Factory Image (Recommended)
CAUTION:
Restoring a hard disk drive to its factory default state deletes all partitions on the hard disk drive and all data stored on those partitions. All of your files and information will be lost! Be sure to back up all important files first.
  1. Press 1 to restore your hard disk drive to its original factory default state. A confirmation message will appear, indicating that all data will be overwritten and lost during the restore process. Be sure to back up all important files before proceeding.
  2. Click Yes to begin the recovery. A message will appear once the operation is finished, indicating the HDD has been restored.
  3. Press any key to restart the computer.

Restore Partition C: of HDD without changing current partition size

CAUTION:
Restoring the C: drive to its factory default state formats your drive. Your information on the drive will be overwritten, and lost. Be sure to back up all important files first. If you have created other partitions (for example, a D: drive) those partitions and any information on them will not be affected and will remain intact.

To restore only the C: drive:
  1. Press 2 to restore only the "C:" drive (the letter C is traditionally used to designate the first volume on the hard disk drive) on your computer. A confirmation message will appear, indicating that all information on the drive will be lost during the recovery process. Be sure to back up all important files before proceeding.
  2. Click Yes to begin the recovery. A message will appear once the operation is finished, indicating that the HDD has been restored.
  3. Press any key to restart the computer.

Restore Image to C: Partition with user specified size
CAUTION:
Resizing and restoring your C: drive to its factory default state formats all partitions on the HDD (for example, if you created a D: drive, it will be deleted during the recovery process) your information will be overwritten, and lost. Be sure to back up all important files first.
To resize and restore your C: drive:
  1. Press 3 at the Toshiba HDD Recovery Utility screen. A confirmation message will appear, indicating that all partitions will be reformatted and all information will be lost during the recovery process. Be sure to back up all important files before proceeding.
  2. Click "Yes" to begin the recovery and to specify the size of the C: drive.
    • Press the Left/Right Arrow keys to increase/decrease the C: drive size by 1 GB increments.

I have an older toshiba laptop and i want to reset it to factory defaults because it used to be my sisters and now its mine. help?

try this
Hard Disk Drive Recovery using the recovery partition
You have the options of recovering your system using the Hard
Drive Recovery partition
to the factory-set default, or recovering
just your C: drive and leaving other partitions (for example, a D:
drive) intact, or changing the size of your C: drive and then
recovering it.
To recover your hard disk drive using the utilities stored on your
computer's HDD:
1 Make sure the computer is turned off.
2 Press and hold the 0 (zero) key on your keyboard while
powering on the computer. When the computer powers on, the
Toshiba Recovery Wizard screen displays.
3 Select one of the options, and then click Next. The options are:
? Recovery of Factory Default Software
? Erase the hard disk

1 On the Toshiba Recovery Wizard screen, select Recovery of
Factory Default Software, and then click Next.
The Recovery of Factory Default Software screen appears.

2 Select Recover to out-of-box-state, and then click Next.
A confirmation message displays reminding you that all data
will be lost during the recovery process. Be sure to save your
work to external media before proceeding.
3 Click Next to begin the recovery.
Once complete, a message displays that the HDD has been
recovered.
4 Press any key on the keyboard to restart the computer.
To recover only your C: drive:
1 On the Toshiba Recovery Wizard Screen, select Recovery of
Factory Default Software, and then click Next.
2 Select Recover without changing the hard drive partitions.
A confirmation message appears, reminding you that all
information on the C: drive will be lost during the recovery
process. Be sure you have saved your work to external media
before proceeding.
3 Click Next to begin the restoration.
Once complete, a message displays that the HDD has been
recovered.
4 Press any key on your keyboard to restart the computer.

Hi,

What your friends have told you is correct for newer Toshiba models, they do have a "recovery partition"

Here is how you recover the OS >>>>>>

1, Make sure the laptop is turned off.
2, Hold down the zero (0) key and turn the laptop on, keep it pressed in until you see the "Toshiba Recovery Wizard" screen.
3, Choose the "Recovery of Factory Default Software" and click next.
4, The "Recovery of Factory Default Software" will appear.
5, Choose the "Recover to out-of-box-state" you will then get a message that all your data will be lost. Click next and the recovery process will start.

Once complete you will see a message that the HDD has been recovered.

Before you start the recovery process its a good idea to back up any data you have unless you not bothered or have already done so.
