Question about Whirlpool GHW9100L Front Load Washer

Whirlpool GHW9100 LW1 will not spin at all. Motor seems to be working fine

    Ok Drain was not clogged. Just Cleared it a couple of weeks ago anyways. No Errors Reported upon running the diagnostic. Drum did not spin (i can spin it by hand easily). Motor was running. Perhaps a belt?

    Belt is off the track and appears to have been sanded away. i.e. black sand like particles everywhere on the inside. The pully does not turn tight on the drum but that might be what it is supposed to do. It engages the drum after a short turn either way. belt no longer will stay on the pully.

    Replace Belt? any other tinkering

Hello, welcome to FixYa.

Based on your information posted... "will not spin at all. Motor seems to be working fine" ... You haven't mentioned if the washer display showed any error code, so I'll assume it did not.

The first thing I'd suggest is removing the filter in the pump and insuring the pump is clear...there may be a lot of water though so hopefully you're close to a drain or have some buckets/towels handy.

here's how...

1) remove the lower access panel, i.e.

If the drain has any debris in the filter, that will prevent the unit from spinning partially or completely...depending on the severity of the blockage.

2) check the pump filter by way of unscrewing it (this is where the towels, wet dry shop-vac or better yet fllor drain comes in handy)

macmarkus_644.jpgIf that fails to resolve the problem it could be a plugged or faulty pressure switch. Have you run a system diagnostic yet ?

Here's how...

Starting the test mode

Close the door.

Press the Control On button.

Select the DRAIN/SPIN cycle.

Select NO SPIN by pressing the SPIN SELECT button, as needed.

Push PREWASH Option button four (4) times within five (5) seconds. C:00 will show in the display.


If Model does not have PREWASH Mode as an option, press RINSE/HOLD.
If the Starting procedure fails, push PAUSE/CANCEL button. Then repeat the starting sequence.

Let me know if any of this helps and what error code, if any shows up after the test mode/diagnostic cycle..

    Thank you for the reply. I would be inclined to think it is a belt (that is certainly best case scenario)...does the drum spin pretty freely, does it continue to spin if you give it a good spin by hand as if there is nothing resisting ?

    You should know by looking through that front access panel if the belt has broken or come off since it would be lying on the base of the washer cabinet.

    If you can't see it you'll need to remove the rear panel so you will be able to tell pretty quick if the belt is off or not. i.e.

    Let me know what you find and we'll move forward from there. If it is indeed the belt you can get them for about $25 at "" or "" to name a couple.

    O.K. that is good info. It does raise a red flag however, particularly your statement... "It engages the drum after a short turn either way. belt no longer will stay on the pully".

    I've seen these pulleys become rounded on the edges of where they attach to the shaft of the basket drive should not have any "lag" when you spin the pulley as you've described.

    This may account for the wear of the belt, but it most certainly explains why it won't stay on in my opinion. If you remove the pulley from your washer, compare it to this image...there should be no "rounding" of the flat edges and square corners...aside from the top & bottom by design.

    Once you've inspected this and can confirm the pulley is worn, make sure you also inspect the basket drive shaft as well for the same type of wear. You should be fine with a new belt and pulley.

    Both are available at locations I mentioned previously. I think you'll be good to go once completing these inspections and repairs. Let me know of course and good luck.

I own a whirlpool duet ghw9100 lw1 and i have two problems...fabric softener wont dispense and the drum fills and overfows with water on occasion

The overfilling problem is due to the water valve allowing water to slowly seep into the machine when not in use. You simply need to replace the water valve. The first thing to do for the fabric softener is to clean the dispenser. Failing that you can remove the top of the machine to observe the correct movement of the zone valve for the dispenser.

Won't switch from wash to spin...

You have a bad motor. Your motor turns in one direction to wash and the other to spin. One directions windings are bad. This is why it is drawing currant so bad. Sorry, seems I'm always the bearer of bad news.

If front loader, take top off (dissconnect plug) check the beltmay be broken- the motor may be spinning on its own
Also spin the drum round to make it has'nt seized

sounds as if perhaps a wire is off on the side of the motor assy, l;ook at he wiring harness, sometimes a "chugging " noise occurs form the motor when one of the harnesses is not attached. and yes its normal to wash with the lid open, not to spin however( thats a saftey issue)

Probably a good assessment. I wasn't trying to second guess your repairman. I just wanted to make sure you were able to have the knowledge to eliminate some of the possibilities yourself. That way, you feel a little more confident that you're getting the correct repair. It sounds like the solenoid is probably clogged or scaled up from sediment. Let me know how things turn out for you.

Take the top off the unit,and check the springs..there are 4 on top and 4 on the bottom..make sure they a attached..and tighten
