Question about Aluratek AHDU350 USB 2.0 Hard Drive

1 Answer

Aluratek went away and won't show up

My Aluratek USB 2.0 External Hard drive (model AHDU350) does not show on my mac desktop. It did until I cleared my key board cache but that may not be why it suddenly disappeared because I also unplugged it and plugged it in again. I remember when I first got it I had a hard time getting it mounted and don't know how I succeeded except tried different cables.. And my mac is an old g4 that does not have a 2 .o usb -- only a 1.1 or something and yet it was working before. My maxtor mounts no problem. Thank you very much for any help.

How do I get everything from my external hard drive onto my Mac and then completely clear the ehd?

The problem you really face is a lack of space on the Mac. The movement of files from the Seagate to the Mac is easy. Plug in the drive and open it, then select the items you want to transfer from the Seagate and drag them to the location on the Mac where you want to store them. Job Done. When the files have all been transferred you just need to "Format" the external drive.

Aluratek AHDU350 worked great for about 2 years. Then, one morning when I came in to work it was dead. Green power light comes on but there is no USB device detected by the OS. Any ideas as to what might...

Sometimes you can remove the hard drive from the case and connect it to your computer. If it works, the interface/case it came in is dead. If it doesn't work, you may be able to have the data extracted by a specialist, but this is very expensive.
If the drive is still under warranty, you may want to decide if the data on the drive is worth opening the drive case and voiding your warranty.
Warranty usually means they replace, not repair the unit,

Plugged alluratek ahdu350 to a mac, and the mac doesn't recognize

Firstly make sure You are not connecting it via a hub or extender but directly to motherboard ports [ ports "sticking out" of Your mac computer], secondly make sure the enclosure has no loose connections,
Please note devices like hard drives are real power hogs, just usb connection may not be enough power, You should have a power adapter You can plug to a wall outlet to give extra amps to Your device
Should it power on fully, make sure to go to system details [you go there by ressing a button in "about my mac" little window from the apple logo menu and check under usb listing if it is listed
lastly go to disk utility and check if the drive is visible, if it is not mounted it may need formatting

Took my hard drive out of my pc lap top because the mother board is fried and i bought the aluratek hard drive cover with usb connecter and mac compatible hooked it up to my mac lap top to transfer files...

The smart bit is irrelevant but you should be able to transfer your files off it OK.
I don't know how mac familiar you are but all you have to do normally is plug the drive in to a convenient USB port and plug in some power. (Some drive cases that don't have external power need to plug in to the computer with a special lead that has 2 USB clugs on one end.)
After 5-10 seconds the drive should pop up on the desktop, you can then open it and copy stuff off.
Where does this pop-up come from as I've not experienced one in years of Mac support.

USB external hard drive does not show up on OS X desktop

You need to be sure that it is formatted as a FAT32 drive and not as a NTFS. When you are in Vista right click on the drive icon and click on properties. You will see NFTS or FAT32 under file system. Your drive must be FAT32 to be recognized by a Mac. has a FAT32 formatting software that you can download for free on your Vista PC and re-format the drive as a FAT32 drive.
