Question about Craftsman 42 in. Deck 19.5hp Lawn Tractor

2 Answers

My mower started and ran find this morning. I took a break then tried to restart it and NOTHING, no clicking, no nothing. My neighbor tried to jump it but still.... NOTHING. Frustrated I decided it might be electrical but since I'm not mechanically savvy with these things, I'm not exactly sure what or WHERE to look. Here's what I have tried; checked the battery connections (clean & tight), air filter clean, oil new, fuel new. I wiggled the ignition wires (plug). I did find the solenoid but not sure how to check it or if that could be the problem. Also, my stupid manual is b/w so I can't even follow the wiring schematics cause I don't know which wire goes where. I read that it might be the starter but honestly... I can't find the thing. Pitiful, I know! Can anyone help?

I can help you. Lets start with the red cable at the battery. But first look under the seat for a switch. See if it is in the right place and has not fallen down. This is a safety switch, some one must be sitting in the seat for it to start or the blades to switch on. So back to the battery and cables, follow the red or positive cable away from the battery, you will find the starter relay. This relay has two large post (cables) One just came from the battery, the other side goes to the starter. Follow it to find the starter. The relay will also have two smaller terminals, One will of these wires will come from the key switch start the engine. The best way to check this relay is to jump from the hot side of the cable (post) to the small terminal that hooks to the start switch. You can use a small screw driver to make the jump. Try this and you will get an Idea as to what is what..

I had a similar problem and found a defective connector in the key switch plug.

First things first, I am sure it is not the battery, you need to make sure the blades are not engaged if they then the mower will not start, most mowers have three safety switches, first brake engaged, second PTO/blades disengaged, third sitting on seat, if all this is done and it will not crank/click then you will need to follow the battery wire down towards the engine looking for a fuse. I hope this helps Tim

Just purchased a toro zero turn mower at garage sale. Ran very well first couple weeks. I was running it the other day, shut it down, jumped back on 10 mins later, mower does not start.

You'll need to check all the safety switches. Probably one in the seat, one for the mower engaged, one for clutch/parking brake engaged, possibly one for reverse gear selected, and possibly for position of the steering arms.

i heard you, battery is fine but needs to be tested. can it deliver the required cold cranking amps? i had experience like that. measured 12+ volts at battery terminals, & hesitantly tried to jump but no go. took out battery for free recharge, they told me bad battery.

2004 JD X595. Has started and ran fine until last week. My brother was using the mower was turned off and would not restart. He jumped it and started fine. He then mowed for 10min and the deck shut down....

Sounds like a Charging system: alternator problem... have your Auto-zone check for your alternator if it is shorted...take the alternator off or haul the whole tractor to the store...they will run a free test...

2002 Ford Taurus, V6 3.0 won't start. Attempted to start, but stop mid start. No clicking, just slience. What else?

Just to the left of the battery is the main fuse junction box and below that under the manifold is the starter with the solenoid on top with the positive cable going to the starter check for a loose connection, and the battery ground sould be right there nearby the starter grounded to the block check it also. You could have a bad cable although it may look okay under the insulator the copper cable may be damaged test with a volt meter while moving the pos and neg cables at both ends.

Mower was running for 15 minutes and I did a couple passes in the lawn, needed to get off for a minute so turned mower off...it will not restart. All I hear is a click when I turn the key.

I would check and clean battery connections and cable from positive terminal to solenoid and from solenoid to starter. If after every connection is clean check voltage from battery. It should be around 12.5 -13 volts d.c.. You can try to jump start it by hooking up jumper cables and make sure that it is in neutral, set break or hold down on brake pedal to close safty switch. You can manually engage seat safty switch and try to start. If it still does nothing but click I would replace battery and/or solenoid. I hope this helps you. Thanks.

Cub cadet 2135 wont start

check for a fuse behind the ignition
it might be blown
then i would check the starter solenoid
if you put a screwdriver accross the bolts that hold the wire from the starter and ignition switch and it tries to start there's ur problem.

Clicking starter=car not starting

Regardless of the battery age, sounds to me as if you have a drain on the electrical system First thing to do is completely recharge battery. An initial quick inspection might show a light staying on, whether it be a door , reading, glove box, or trunk lights, among many other things. If nothing is obvious an electical reading of the system while removing and reinstalling fuses will show the circuit causing the drain, Hope this helps
