Question about GE JVM1630 Microwave Oven

Open Question

We have a JVM1630 BK 01 microwave. It is about 4-5 years old. One day earlier this week, it just stopped working. No power at all. The power to the outlet is fine. Other devices can work through it. There was no sound, no smell or anything. It just stopped working. Now, nothing displays. No clock. No anything. Does anyone have any idea of why this might have occurred? Is there any type of system reset? Thanks

SOURCE: We ALSO have a JVM1630

You can download the online parts list and service diagrams for your model at the following link:

http://www.appliancepartspros.com/

Here is the direct link to the documents for your exact model:

http://www.appliancepartspros.com/partsearch/model.aspx?model_id=5226475

To view the service diagrams just use your mouse to click on the link, which is the underlined and highlighted text just above. This will open a new web browser page automatically for you and allow you to view the information at the website indicated. Then just enter the model number of your microwave oven.

You may need ADOBE READER installed on your computer to read PDF documents like the diagrams.
You can download this free at WWW.ADOBE.COM if necessary.
Click on the DOWNLOAD ADOBE READER button on right side of the ADOBE home page when you get there, then follow the onscreen instructions to install the software on your computer.

I will assume you have checked the house's main circuit panel for any tripped breakers and tested the electrical wall outlet for a good power supply. Reset the house circuit breaker at the panel if necessary.

Otherwise, hopefully the problem is just a blown main fuse inside the microwave. In order to access and check this you will have to disconnect the power cord and then remove the oven from the wall if it is an overhead model. Then remove the case in order to access the electrical parts inside.

Components inside the microwave like the main capacitor can remain EXTREMELY dangerous even after the power cord is disconnected. So if you are not familiar with basic electrical safety precautions when working with this type of equipment, then you should leave this kind of task for a trained appliance technician.

Here is a picture of a generic main fuse for a microwave:

http://www.appliancepartspros.com/part_details.aspx?part_id=4440371

And here is the price and details for the main fuse on your model:

Just take the appropriate safety precautions and replace the fuse with an exact match and reassemble. If you tested the old fuse and it was still good, then you may be dealing with a more complicated and expensive fix possibly involving the control panel circuit board. At that point you may want to consider seeking additional assistance or just getting a new oven.

Thank you very much and good luck.

Joe.

It does not get hot

Hi, Unfortunately there are several things that can cause no heat.

1. The High Voltage Capacitor
2. Power Diode
3. Magnetron
4. Control Board
5. Door interlock
6. High temp cut off temp sensor
Most of the time it is either the Capacitor or Power Diode that fails. These two are not expensive repairs. Actually 1,2, 5 & 6 are reasonable repairs.

3 & 4 will cost at least 50% of the replacement cost of the unit.

I still think you will get off with a reasonable repair expense.

The Diode and Capacitor can be found here:

http://www.repairclinic.com/Appliance-Parts?s=t-jvm1630-%3d%3ded617017i254740g4

A repair person may opt to modify the diode installation to a less expensive diode that will still work normally with no danger. I.e. a $23.00 Diode vs a $53.00 Diode. Same electrical function.

Neff microwave combination oven

no solution sorry but we also have a Neff mw/combi oven which keeps blowing for no apparent reason, the Neff repair man has looked at it 4 times and practically replaced every component -power module, operating module, relay board, door switches but it`s just gone again! The model is a H5972N0GB/01 and it is approx 3 yrs old, no problem for the first 2 years .Time to write to Neff -is yours the same model?

Microwave appears to work fine but will not heat at all.

Sounds like the thermal protector on the mag tube quit. It may have gotten too hot and opened up. That is the lesser of all the evils that can happen to a Microwave.
