If there are no obstructions in the discharge hose then I belive that the pump is most likely the blame. Something may be caught up in the impellers of the pump not allowing it to create suction. You can also look to see if the electrical connection on the pump has in some way become disconnected via a plug or loose wire.
MAke sure that it is not a leak from a loose joint of the hose clamp or the leak from the drain pump/valve. if you think that the drain end cap is missing this can be plugged using a similar rubber plug. If not try the Whirlpool dealer- service - for the correct part.
If you have overloaded the machine , then it will start drain while washing process, and while draining , if you miss balance the clothes placed inside the drain, then it will get over heated and start draining.
So check out these factors while using it.

This sounds like something is stuck in the drain pump. You can remove the inner cover to look for obstructions. You have a dual purpose motor it does the both circulating and draining. The blockage is causing it to overheat and trip the thermal protector. You can remove the drain assembly from underneath if you don't find anything from above. There is a video at www.appliancehelponline.com/servicemanual.html that walks you thru most of this. It is a different model but pretty close. If you find no obstructions the motor may be failing.
My Whirlpool dishwasher model no. DU960PWKQ1 will not drain after wash. Dismantled impeller/strainer and there were no clogs.Drainline is clear.
I think motor is reversible, so there is no drain valve? HELP ME PLEASE.
