Question about Audio Players & Recorders

Open Question

Have 3rd HK Avr 254 receiver (first two killed under warranty by t-storms) with most current firmware , dsp version 1.2.9. Have never had a problem connecting my 2 year old PS3 60GB to the receiver via hdmi but this new replacement seems not to work connected via hdmi. TV display returns 'no signal' and after power cycling says ' connection' prior to no signal? PS3 works fine when connected direct to TV via HDMI? HK CS Says problem has to lie with PS3 video setup which has not been changed since last receiver swap? I have tried all hdmi cable / port combinations and also have a cable box conected to the receiver via hdmi (all ports / cables tried) that works fine? Any insight into what I could try other than a system reset (which is nect on my list) would be appreciated/ Mike

SOURCE: no HDMI video output from AVR-588 receiver to plasma TV ???

You can also use a digital coax cable (color orange) to go into coax 1 for DVD coax 2 for cable box. Just make sure to set the coax in input settings. The coax cables are a little cheaper than the optical cables and work just as well.

Mine was replaced by HK under warranty with a brand new one with the latest firmware. I had to wait about 2 months though to get a new one as opposed to a refurbished one. You have to demand it. Otherwise you get the refurb. My new one hasn't exhibited any issues and everything seems to work better than before (PS3 menu "clicks" all seem to work now and I don't get the pink or green flashes between sources I used to get). So a replacement was the fix for mine..... :(

SOURCE: getting picture lines across tv that keep

You will need to run HDMI directly from TV to Cable Box. Then run an optical or digital coaxial from your cable box to your receiver. The version of HDMI in your receiver is 1.1 or 1.2 and will not pass signal correctly. The recording industry has placed many roadblocks in front of HDMI to keep us from recording.... Go figure... That's the fix though. Hope this helps

You can check all your speaker wires for shorts, as well as try the reset to factory defaults procedure found in your owner's manual, but I doubt this will resolve your issue. If you require more assistance, or would like to inquire about repairing your HK, please visit my website at, and contact me there. BTW, I worked for Harman as technical support for all Harman, JBL and Infinity products. Thank you.

I have the Harman Kardon AVR 254. Just recently it stopped responding. It will cut on and the volume dial will respond but none of the front panel buttons will. Any suggestions on a fix?

There should be two fuses on the secondary board of the main power transformer. They don't look like regular fuses - they are small round can fuses. These are probably open. HK under-valued these fuses originally, and they need to be replaced with 3.15 amp.

Harman Kardon AVR 154 OSD setup screen wont display

It will only display via component. Your HDMI firmware is either 1.1 or 1.2 and has HDCP issues (High Definition Copyright Protection) it's a firmware problem that has been fixed on all new receivers, not just a HK issue, all receivers! the new version 1.3a and 1.3b have fixed the issue. Unfortunately you cannot update the firmware on the receiver. Hope this explains it for you, sorry! Lot's of angry people out there!!! myself included.

Harman/kardon avr 247 no audio or LED display on the reciever

I've had the exact problem. HK in the states is no help, you need to deal with a company in Montreal (Jan Industries). Regular techs are unable to fix it without schematics that only authorized dealers have and the manufacturer. This problem happened to me just after 2 years and outside warranty. I've bought a Yamaha today.

Harmon AVR 254 No Video, No Sound.

The reason your receiver is causing you issues is cause of a 2 time Delay fuse's on the transformer board all you have to do is to by pass them.
Check the connector on the top front of the HDMI board. at the bottom of the connector it tells you the voltage of each wire the middle one is GND. should read 1.8v and 5.6v if the 5.6v line is dead. you key's in the front panel and sometimes video and audio as well.. will also stop working. all you have to do is to by pass them.

I will be posting a video later today on how to fix this issue. Regards,

No sound from "Front Right" channel

The very FIRST thing to check is to make certain ALL of your speakers have an IMPEDENCE of 8 OHMS. Virtually all speakers of even modest quality will include this specification on a label on the back of the speaker. You CANNOT run more than (2) TWO speakers with 4 OHMs impedence on ANY amplifier (technical discussion too long!) [NOTE: MOST HK equipment have internal overload protection systems to prevent permanent damage. However, you cannot re-set these systems yourself. Your dealer or authorized HK service center must do this.] But, before you take this beast in for service, there is one more "test": check for shorted and/or mis-connected/disconnected speaker cables/wires. Visually inspect connections at the receiver and speakers first. You might find something obvious! If everything looks okay, then disconnect ALL of the speakers; and reconnect and test them one at a time (at relatively low volume.) For example, reconnect the left front speaker, test the system; THEN add the left front, test the system, and so on, ADDING one more speaker each time - FIRST MAKING SURE EACH OF THEM HAS AN IMPEDENCE OF AT LEAST 8 OHMS! IF there is a short (or bad speaker) this will help isolate it. HK is among the best equipment money can buy, and their equipment is pretty much "bullet proof!" Hopefully one of these "fixes" will work for you. GOOD LUCK!
