Low voltage shorts can be a real pain to find!!! i would try a process of ellimination: first i would try to elliminate the thermostat. then id look for a wire that is vibrating on something in the cabinet.

It is true that it is a sealed unit and should never need charged with freon unless a leak has developed. Most service techs will tell you that they cannot be recharged because you do have to break into the sealed system with a solder in valve or a line tap. They hold such a small amount of freon that finding and fixing the leak can be next to impossible and time consuming. Make sure that the inside and outside coils are clean. The outside fins can be brushed with a semi-soft brush like a toilet brush and then washed out with water. Make sure your power is off first. If the coils are dirty it will act just like it does if the refrigerant is low. 75 to 80 percent of air conditioner service calls are solved by cleaning the outside condenser coil. Brush up and down and do not put so much water pressure on it that the cooling fins start bending.

What causes a repetitive, rapidly repeating, hammering or slapping sound in my rv roof top ac?

It's sounds like a critter may have started to make a nest in the blower motor fan. I recommend trying to clean out the fan motor squirrel cage.

After turning the unit off, there is a hum for a few minutes, no fan noise, just a hum, and then it turns itself off eventually. The unit is about three years old and is otherwise cooling the room.

From what you have described, it sounds like the fan motor may be seized. In which case, it should be replaced. Depending on the age of the unit, it may be better to replace it than repair it. As parts and labor to repair it, can be almost as much as purchasing a new unit. As the motor assembly alone, runs about $150.00 + Labor.

I hope this has helped you and thanks for choosing FixYa.

I have an 8 year old Friedrich model SS10J10AR unit. The unit keeps shutting off when in cooling mode. When I leave it in FAN only it runs. I tried to reset the circuit board by hitting "Money...

Honestly, repairing and 8 year old AC unit (assuming parts are still available) can cost almost as much as buying a new one. If this is the first time you've had a real problem with it ... You've gotten your monies worth over the past 8 years. But, the decision is yours to make.

Thanks for choosing FixYa.

My 9 year old 17,500 BTU wall mounted window Unit is freezing over with little air coming out. New filter & clean coils still have same problem.

Sounds as though the indoor fan is about to give up the ghost.. 2 choices . 1 start looking for a newer more effecent unit. 2 replace the fan motor.. sorry but it does not sound good..Wiat I just thought It just might have a run capasitor ?? Not sure.. But it could be going bad as well .. Justa thought on that one. either way you can call a tech or buy a new unit.

My Freidrich air conditioner is 2 years old. It seems to run very "rough" - it's hard to explain the sound I'm hearing. Still cooling off the room.

Sounds like your unit is maybe unlevel causing the fan blade to rub or its not draining properly and the fan blade is running through water and should be pulled and cleaned.

Compressor turns on but fan does not, fan motor is not siezed up rv is only one year old. but ac has not been turned on for 9 months.

Ok, the easiest way to check this is to remove the upper shroud of the AC unit. Have someone inside the coach while you are up there, have them turn the thermostat to ON/High Fan. If the fan does not come one, spin it by hand to see if that gets it going. If that works, let it run for a few minutes, shut down the AC and then lubricate the shaft points on the motor (WD-40 works). Try the unit again, if it does not start on its own this time, then you probably have a bad fan capacitor. It is located in the upper unit inside the small access panel. Two brown wires attached to it.

Hope this helps,

Sounds like a bad limit switch. Open and test continuity on all limits with power off and at least one wire off one side of each
