I would certainly change the sensor before checking anything else.
heat, vibration and moisture can all affect the sensors on these units.
it is possible that the control board has developed a fault, but the sensor has to be the first thing to do.
fortunately they are usually fairly cheap, and most just pull out and insert the new sensor.
please feel free to ask again if a new sensor does not sort the problem.
