Question about Garden

1 Answer

I have a Bushhog FTH 600 finishing mower that I use behind my small tractor. The gear box locked up and it blew all the oil out. Do I need to purchase a new gear box and if so, where can I get one for a reasonable price or do I just rebuild it? Then how to I go about repairing it?

Hi and welcome to FixYa, I am Kelly

Most likely the seal item 9 of this link has failed:

However.... There can be damage to the bearings (Item 7) that caused the gearbox to lock up. The pinion (Item 19) will also have to be inspected for damage as will item 17 the crown gear along with the bearings items 4 and 12.

To disassemble you will need to first remove the gearbox from the unit... then remove the top cover item 13, remove the nut item 21 the tooth washer item 21 the seal item 9 and the inner nut item 8.
Additionally you will need to remove the snap rings items 2, 16 and 20 to get it apart. This is not hard.. it just takes time and patience. I do NOT know where you can get a used gearbox at a fair price.

Your operators manual is here:

You can use the Bush Hog site by selecting model EFM600 here: Note that there are 2 different gearbox assemblies.

Bush Hog Parts page: (((No prices listed. See the first link for approximate prices before clicking a quantity)))

If your a fair mechanic rebuilding this is not a difficult task... The bad thing is.... the expense of parts can run up the repair cost pretty quick. I do know that the going rate for a complete USED EFM600 is around $1,500.00 and you do not know if you will experience the same problem that you currently have. Most are sold "as is." Unless you find one that was hardly used.... it is a risk.

Thanks for choosing FixYa,

Location of rear gear plug to add grease.

Hi, you don't give any information on what type of tractor or mower you are asking about, but most these days are hydraulic transmissions or what they call "Hydro-static" meaning that they are a sealed unit that is filled with oil not grease. You also don't say why you want to do this, so if you are doing routine maintenance these type "gear boxes" don't require any. A tip would be to see if it is belt driven.

I have a Sears riding mower model #917.255460 that the hydrostat transmission and wheels have locked up. Any thoughts how to fix.

I have answered, this similar question, and have given advice, what i would do. If you are a just a week end doer, i would not attempt to try to make your own repairs. This Hydrostatic Transaxle,is quite a complicated piece,You will need a profession, service technician to work on this. It has so many bearings, gears and a lot of small parts. This sound like,a gear is slipping, when the tractor is put in gear and under a load. It could be as simple as servicing, the Transaxle. I have seen this problem, when the Transaxle had air trapped in it. Your Owner's Manual, explains what to do,if there is air in the transaxle. You have to move the tractor about five in both directions. This usually, takes care of the problem. This occurs, sometimes after servicing the Transaxle. There is something thing you can do,check, for leaks of oil around the axles and or,at the Transaxle it self. It could be low on transmission oil. If this is the case, you will need to replace the seals. Unless, you know what your doing,i wouldn't attempt to dissemble the Transaxle assembly. Instead, call Sears for a repair service or call any lawn mower shop, that does this kind of repair.Sincerely,Brad Locke

Either through the inlet valve stem seal, or the needle in the carb is leaking, start by fitting an inline fuel tap so there is no chance of fuel leaking when the machine is stood.

Echo trimmer model SRM 210 I'm trying to install a brush blade but cannot get the plastic 3/4" nut off. Any advice?

There is a hole in the dust cap on the side of the bottom of the gear box. Stick a small screwdriver, or a 1/8 drill bit to lock the gear box. Once you have locked it, you simply unscrew the nut.

Hope this helps.

I have a JD 1070 4 wh dr, when running a brush hog on the back pto, what would make the pto shaft slow down under a load when cutting light brush, funny smell. Checked all oil levels.

Reading on line, I see your tractor has a PTO clutch. It must be slipping. It either needs adjusted or replaced. A slipping clutch disc will make a bad smell.
