Will not level
Most likely what's happening is the laser spins and it will level to the front corner, then the far back corner, then back to the middleish, and rotates at a slow speed, and error lights flash, right?
Couple things can cause this. First, the compensator uses an oil bath to decide it's level position. It shines the laser through the oil, and a detector sees the reflection and moves up or down to adjust the reflected beam to the center. If either the oil has leaked, or the laser diode has failed, the sensor will not see the beam to level. If you open it up, and it's oily inside, the compensator has definitely leaked. Laser and oil bath compensator are 1 part, not available anymore. Chuck it out.
If not oily inside, there's a small circuit board on the side of the compensator that is plugged in to the circuit board below. This is the leveling sensor. I've been told by another technician that unplugging this connector, and plugging it back in after 30 seconds or so can bring them back to life. I've never had it work, but I always try.
Last thing it could be is the encooder/encooder wheel. on the back of the compensator there is a small sensor that is right below the rotating head. There is a picket fence sticker on the underside of the head. if the sticker is worn, bubbled or damaged, it may not be picked up by the encooder. or the encooder may be faulty. The head gear/encooder wheel assy is still available as it's used in other units. you may still be able to get the encooder too, they changed them part way though production, depends on the version you have.
