My pc desktop is showing a white screen when its on what should i do?

Is it an LCD monitor ?

When an LCD screen has turned completely white, there are three normal causes: the screen is defective, the video cable is not connected correctly, or the graphics card on the motherboard of the computer is faulty. You will need to troubleshoot these possibilities to determine which problem you have. If you are not experienced in working on computer equipment, you should not attempt to disassemble your LCD screen because you could easily damage it. Seek professional assistance unless you have experience working on computer hardware.

Disconnect the white LCD screen from the computer by unscrewing the blue monitor cable. Connect the working LCD screen to your computer by attaching its blue monitor cable to the same slot. If your computer display does not show on the functioning LCD screen, try rebooting your computer. If it still does not display, the problem is with your computer's graphic card on the motherboard. Seek professional repair assistance. If your computer display shows normally on the working LCD screen, proceed to Step 2. Unplug the LCD monitor with the white screen. Disassemble the rear panel of the monitor with the small screwdriver. Carefully separate the screws into piles so that you can keep track of how to reassemble the monitor. Locate the internal video cable, a gray cable with a plug on the end that connects to the main components of the screen. See Below for the References section for photos of the video cable for assistance. http://www.laptoprepair101.com/laptop/2008/04/13/laptop-lcd-screen-turned-white/ Unplug the cable, checking for any debris or blockage. Reconnect the cable firmly. Reassemble the LCD screen. Plug it in and connect it to your computer. If the screen is still white, you have a defective LCD screen. You will need to replace it or take it to a professional repair service for assistance. Hope this helps.

Tip

How to resize your desktop background.

If your desktop is smaller than the dimensions of your monitor then follow the following steps to get a full screen:

Setting the resolution:

1) Right click on an open spot on your desktop and select Properties at the bottom of the popup menu.
slasher_x_35.jpg

2) This will then open up the Display Properties window as shown below.
slasher_x_36.jpg

3) Click on the Settings tab (it's to the top right of the Display Properties window as shown in the image below.
slasher_x_37.jpg

4) At the bottom left of the settings tab there is a Screen resolution heading with a slider bar beneath it.
5) Slide this bar to the left or right until you find the resolution you like.
6) The click Apply when you have found the right resolution.

Sliding the bar to the left = lower resolution, larger desktop icons and less quality.
Sliding the bar to the right = higher resolution, smaller desktop icons and better quality.
NB: If you are using a CRT (older screen) the max resolution will be around 1280x1024. Newer LCD screen (flat and thin monitors) can go way up to 1920x1080 and beyond if HD is supported.

NOTE: If when doing the screen resolution changes your screen goes blank after you click Apply then immediately hold down the Enter key to restore it back to your previous settings

If this doesn't work then it just maybe the case that you need to set the auto screen fit function on the monitor itself using the buttons provided on the monitor.

This tip is useful when you plug in a monitor and the screen displays the No Signal or Signal out of Range massages. Simply change the resolution to something the monitor can handle and there you go.

No Graphics

Shine a flashlight on the dark screen to see if you barelysee the icons on the desktop. If so, then the LCD Inverter is bad.

Plug in an external monitor and see if the display shows up on it. It can beany kind of monitor even the old big fat crt monitors as long as it has a vgacable to connect to your computer's vga port. If so that proves yourvideo card is ok. The video will show on most systems when you rebootwithout you having to do anything. Some systems will require you to hit the FN(Function key) + F1 thru F12. Hold down the FN key then hit the correctkey for displaying on the monitor (F1 thru F12). The correct key willnormally have CRT/LCD on it or it will have the icon of a display.

If you see no icons by shinning a flash light and the external monitor works, then your screen is bad. If you see no icons by shinning the flash lightand nothing shows on the external monitor, then most likely your video card isbad.

So the fan is running, what about the hard drive? Do you hear the hard drive spinning?
If it looks like it booted all the way except the display is blank try the steps below.

Shine a flashlight on the dark screen to see if you barely see the icons on the desktop. If so, then the LCD Inverter is bad.

Plug in an external monitor and see if the display shows up on it. It can be any kind of monitor even the old big fat crt monitors as long as it has a vga cable to connect to your computer's vga port. If so that proves your video card is ok. The video will show on most systems when you reboot without you having to do anything. Some systems will require you to hit the FN (Function key) + F1 thru F12. Hold down the FN key then hit the correct key for displaying on the monitor (F1 thru F12). The correct key will normally have CRT/LCD on it or it will have the icon of a display.

If you see no icons by shinning a flash light and the external monitor works, then your screen is bad. If you see no icons by shinning the flash light and nothing shows on the external monitor, then most likely your video card is bad.
If you don't think the system booted all the way then try the steps below.
Beep tones and blinking lights tells the technicians what is going on with the laptop and why it is not booting. Most times it's a motherboard issue when you hear beeps or blinking lights continuous. Most times the problem is with the memory or Video Card. Count the Blinking Lights or Beeps and take note of their pattern (1 Long or 1 Long followed by 2 Short).

Maybe your memory is bad or the memory slot is bad.

Remove the Power Cord, Open the Case and remove one of the memory chips. Set the chip aside then try rebooting the computer. If it boots, then you know the memory chip you set aside is bad so mark an x on it with an ink pen. If it fails to boot then move the chip to the next memory slot and try rebooting. If it fails take the chip out and set it aside, then put the other chip in and try booting it in both slots. If it boots, just to verify that the chip set aside is bad, mark an x on it and put it into the open memory chip slot and try booting.

No signal message on my screen

That means your Monitor is not receiving a signal that it is connected to the computer. Make sure that the cable from the screen is in snuggly and tightened in the back of the computer. Also make sure that the other end of that cable is in tight on the back of the monitor.

If both are in good, then either your Monitor is bad or the Video Card in the computer is bad. If you have another monitor try it on the computer, if it works, that means the other monitor is bad. If you have another computer, plug the monitor that is getting the message into that computer and see what happens. If it works, that means the video card in the original computer is bad.

You can even plug the monitor into a laptop if it has a VGA cable and the laptop has a VGA Port. Some laptops will require you to hit the FN (function key) plus a (F1 thru F12) key to get the image to display. Press and HOLD the FN key then hit the appropriate (F1 thru F12) key to display the image. The appropriate key will normally have LCD/CRT written on it or it will have the icon of a display screen.

I have a Dell Inspiron 531S, I have both two different monitor slot, does my PC support dual monitor systems?

Yes.

The area on the back of the computer, that has two ports to connect a monitor, is a Graphics Card.

It is a PCI-Express graphics card, and is plugged into a PCI-Express x16 slot on the motherboard.
(Expansion Slot)

It has a blue VGA port, white DVI port, and black S-Video port.

The area on the upper left with a blue outline around a VGA port, is a VGA port connected directly to the motherboard. It is Integrated Graphics.

You CANNOT use Integrated Graphics, and a graphics card at the same time.

It's either use the Integrated Graphics VGA port, OR use the graphics port/s on the graphics card.
BIOS will Not support using both Integrated Graphics, and a graphics card.

HOWEVER, you can use the VGA port, and the DVI port when using two monitors.
You will be only using just the graphics card.

Example of a VGA port, (Connector), and VGA cable,

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VGA_connector

Example of a DVI port, and DVI cable,

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DVI_connector

1) Whatever monitor you have that has a VGA cable, plug it into the blue VGA port on the graphics card.

(There are VGA monitors {CRT} that resemble a small TV. VGA cable is usually attached.
There are also LCD flat screens that have a VGA connector, for a VGA cable, and may also have both a VGA, and a DVI connector.

To digress for a moment;
VGA is Analog. It uses an Analog video signal.
DVI is digital. It uses a Digital video signal.

A computer naturally puts out a digital video signal. This digital signal has to be converted by the computer, into analog for an analog monitor. This slows the graphics process down. This is one reason it is best to use digital )

2) Plug a monitor with a DVI cable into the white DVI port on the graphics card.

3) Turn the monitors on.

4) Turn the Inspiron 531s on.

5) When Windows has loaded, right-click on an empty area of your desktop computer screen.
Now left-click on Properties at the bottom of the list.
Left-click on the Settings tab.

6) You are now looking at a small window that has two monitor icons in it.
Monitor 1 icon, and monitor 2 icon.

Monitor 1 icon is your Primary Display.
Monitor 2 icon will be for the Secondary Display you are adding.

Note how monitor 1 icon is sitting to the Left, and monitor icon 2 is sitting to the Right.
This is how your monitors are supposed to be arranged on your computer desk.

If the second monitor is on the Left on your computer desk, you need to move the icons around.
Move monitor 2 icon to the Left.

Left-click on the icon, hold the left mouse key down, and drag the monitor 2 icon over to the left side of monitor 1 icon. (All the way over, or it will snap back to where it was)

It may matter to you how your monitors are arranged. It may not. Once you read the following it may help you decide.

7) Left-click on monitor icon 2 if you have not already done so.
Go down to where it states, "Extend my Windows desktop onto this monitor"

8) Left-click once in the empty square, to the left of Extend my Windows desktop onto this monitor.

9) Now left-click on Apply at the bottom Right corner.

10) Finally left-click on OK at the bottom Left corner.

You should now see your desktop screen on both monitors.

When using the internet on both monitors, you have to drag the screen from the Primary monitor to the Secondary monitor.

Go to the left side of the screen. Left-click right on the edge of the blue frame. Hold the left mouse key down after you click, and drag the screen across to the left.

Doesn't work?
Go to the right side, click on the blue frame, and drag the screen to the right.

This is why it may matter how the monitors are arranged on your computer desk.

It's kind of eerie your first time dragging the screen across.

You will also find out why it is best to use two similar monitors, when using dual monitors. The pixel resolution is different for both monitors, if they are different from each other.
