Question about GE Spacemaker JVM1640SJ Microwave Oven

GE JVM 1500 series microwave oven

The light is continously on in the box. I can hear a small noice like there is a small fan running. The numbers buttons are not responding and the microwave is not heating. It almost looks like it froze up. I disconnected power to it and turned it back on but it doesn't solve the problem. Any suggestions?

This is usually caused by either a bad door switch, a loose door switch mount, or occasionally a problem on the control panel.

Even though a door switch clicks, it may still be bad inside. Its continuity must be checked.

Doorswitch or mount trouble can be caused by slamming the door or byopening the door while it's cooking without hitting the Stop pad first.

Thereare plastic mounts inside the microwave which hold the door switchesand onto which the door latches lock when you close the door.

The screws on these mounts may be loose. If they get too loose, the switches will not be activated properly.

Sometimesit's a broken tab on the switch holder, allowing the switch to rotatejust out of position. This tabcan be hard to see, since it is under the bottom edge of the switch.

One test that sometimes helps is to gently lift up (and/or push down) on the door orhandle as you try to start it. If it works or tries to work, then it'sa door switch mount or door alignment issue.

Ifyou or someone you know decide to look into it, we have criticalinformation on safety, disassembly and door switches at our site, andour link is at our listing here on FixYa:.

You can find helpful exploded view diagrams and order parts by entering your full model number here.

There may alsobe a "mini-manual" hidden inside the unit behind the control panel orhidden on the left side behind the grille, which is very helpful whentroubleshooting & testing.

If you think the problem is on the control panel, we repair these nationwide by mail for $39.95 postpaid in most cases.

Exhaust Fan makes noise

Check to make sure that nothing is obstructing the fan blade causing the noise, if not then the bearings in the fan motor are more than likely going out causing the metal on metal noise.

I have a GE SpacemakerXL Microwave Oven Model JVM 1350 The fan and the light works, but the microwave is not working and the screen says

There are two possibilities, one of the door switches has malfunctioned, usually caused by food partical buildup, more than likely. or there is an issue with the microprocessor control board, less likely.

GE microwave lights and fan do not work

If one of the surface light bulbs burnt out it may have shorted out the control board. Take the control board out and look for a burnt spot on the board. It may be able to be repaired with a drop of solder or solder in a jumper wire. Or you can purchase a new board, which may cost more than you want to put into the microwave.

GE JVM 1650 Microwave Night Light does not work

We see (and repair) this a lot. The problem is on the control panel, which we regularly repair nationwide by mail for $39.95 postpaid in about a week.

This light failure often occurs when a bulb goes out and the filament shorts, or when the bulbs are removed or installed without first unplugging the oven from the power line. Either can cause such a failure on the controller.

Sometimes this will also affect the exhaust fan operation, too. The lights and fan can be inoperable or stuck on too.

In your case, it may just be a shorted dimming diode, a black diode usually located between the light relay and the connector.

(Not to be mistaken for the tinier red-bodied diode on the other side of the relay that protects the relay coil).

If it is shorted, you will have bright lights in both the bright and dim settings.

In case you or someone you know has the tools and experience to desolder and solder small components, the replacement rectifier diode is not critical and can be any of these:

1N4001, 1N4002, 1N4003, 1N4004, 1N4005, 1N4006, 1N4007, NTE116, or NTE125 some of which are available form Radio Shack.

At our Web site, you can get details of our service, plus we have a video available showing how to remove a typical over the range control panel assembly in under 5 minutes.

There should be a "mini-manual" (tech sheet) hidden inside the unit behind the control panel or hidden on the left side behind the grille, which is very helpful when troubleshooting, testing, and locating components.

Microwave not working, please suggest

Your magnetron tube has failed. According to the warranty on the Profile Series microwave ovens, the magnetron is covered for 5 years from the date of purchase, but labor is not included. I would call GE Customer Service and when they ask for the model number (which begins with JVM) and the serial number, be sure to give the date of purchase as the date you closed on your house. If they insist upon charging you for a service call and labor, I would call my builder's Customer Service Department and demand (very nicely) that they intervene with GE to waive the service and labor charges. That worked for me (Lennar Homes).
