Question about Garmin GPSMAP 545s GPS Receiver

2 Answers

I HAVE A MARINE GARMIN 545s THAT WILL NOT TURN ON. IT IS NOT UNDER WARRANTY. I turned it on after wintering, the unit was in a garage protected all winter long, I turned it on, it came on briefly and then the screen went blank. Now, it will not turn on at all. The connectors on the back look clean and undisturbed. I have not tried to fix it, and have not taken it apart to see its internal workings. Other than unhooking it and rehooking it, I haven't tried anything.

Is there an internal battery? We checked it with a meter and power is going to the unit, but it does not turn on. Is there a fuse inside the unit?

  • gpaith Jun 13, 2011

I posted the question on the GPS545S. None of the solutions have worked. We bought a new battery. The one you told me to go purchase was the wrong size. The technician took the unit apart with unclear directions from your suggestions. The technician got to the battery, checked the battery in the unit, and it checked stronger than the purchased one. The technician did not replace the battery. I took the unit back to the boat, re-installed it, and the GPS545S still would not turn on. All the connections to the unit were cleaned and checked with a meter and ground. Also the positive into the unit checked OK. I tried to turn on the unit, a little light even on the unit itself would not light up. This unit is less than 1 year old and doesn't need maps updated. I am requesting a land address to send the unit in for repair since these answers that have been posted have had no effect. I like Garmins. I own 2 other units besides this one, but I will not buy another marine Garmin if this is the problems I might encounter with each one.

What happens when you put the unit on the charging clip, if no action at all , first check that there is output from the cord. you should also have the battery tested since it had spent a long time in idle state.

thanks for using fixya

  • Thing with these Garmin batteries is they go bad after sitting for a while without being used. I recommend plugging it in for 2 hours and then try turning it on and if it turns on it is the battery. Mine did the same thing. It won't hold a charge on it's own but for 20 minutes or so but works fine if I leave it plugged into the car. The reason I say to leave it plugged in for 2 hours before trying to turn it on is because the battery is so dead it will take a while to even get enough of a charge to turn on at all.

    • If you need to change the battery keep this information on hand in case the firmware is lost and the GPS does not turn on after you replace the battery. The following info is how to reload the firmware to your GPS.

    1. This link herehttps://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?cID=... and save the file to your computer.

    2. When it finishes downloading they go to the file.

    3. Double click on the file and the file will begin to extract Garmin and run a program to transfer the software update to an SD card.

    4. Now load the SD card into your Garmin 545s and turn it on to replace the system software.

    Tony

    • To remove the battery follow these steps.

    1. Remove all of the screws from the back side of the case.

    2. There is a nut holding the antennae post on the back of the GPS. Use a screwdriver to unscrew it.

    3. Use a thin screw driver blade to gently pry apart the case. Pry on the portion under the buttons, not under the screen. Otherwise you may damage the screen. There is a gasket between the case halves so be careful not to damage it also.

    4. Remove the white ribbon cable that goes top both halves by gently sliding it out of the slot on the "screen" half.

    5. Gently lift the screen and take look at the ribbon cable & 2 wire connectors attached.

    6. Leave copper colored ribbon in place.

    7. You now need remove the red & black "power" wire at the side.

    8. To remove this you must hold the base - connected to the board - while pulling the wire plug straight up with tweezers. Be careful or you will have to solder this part on also.

    9. With the screen flopped over you can peel back the foil shielding to get access to the two screws underneath. There are 2 screws under the foil, and 2 screws visible on the board. Remove all 4 screws.

    10. Next there is a ribbon cable on the "button" end that wraps to the other side.

    11. To remove it you must slide the "clip" portion sideways and swing it up. This will release the ribbon cable.

    12. You are now ready to remove the screen/circuit board combo and get to the other side.

    13. The stock battery is made in Germany and rated at 3VDC - 7mm in diameter. It is soldered to the board with 2 tabs. The tabs are spot welded to the battery. Use a Volt Ohm meter to verify the positive/negative direction and write it down.

    14. Unsolder the tabs from the board and your old battery will fall in your hands.

    15. Soldier the new battery in per the polarity points.

    16. Reverse to finish.

    17. Now the GPS should turn on and grab some satellite signals in less than a minute. If not follow the instructions I listed in my last post.

    Regards,

    Tony

    • No, the battery was the correct one. Not sure what you or the tech are talking about, the battery was the correct one, but you enjoy your free solution. Batteries don't come with a charge they have to be charged so it makes sense that it was not charged.

My garmin 545s does not turn on

My Garmin 545s would not power up. I took the unit to West Marine, where they had the correct cable to hook it up and test it. The unit immediately powered up and I purchased a $22 cable and installed it. Easiest test and fix I could come up with. Really cheap fix.

Does your Garmin GPSMAP 545s freeze up?
Is the screen stuck, or do you loose satellite coverage?

I recommend upgrading the system software of your Garmin 545s. There may not be physical damage to your unit, and it may be completely revitalized by replacing the GPSMAP software with the latest version 5.30 (as of January 7, 2010).

  1. Click on "Download" and choose to save the file to your computer.
  2. Choose a location where you can easily find the file, such as the 'My Documents' folder or 'C:\'.
  3. Once the download is complete, go to the location where you saved the file.
  4. Double-click on the downloaded file. This will automatically extract the files to C:\Garmin and run a program to transfer the software update to an SD card.
  5. Load the SD card into your GPSMAP 545s and turn it on to replace the system software of your unit.
I hope that helps.

IS THRER A WAY TO CHECK DC ELECTRICAL SYSTEM ON THE GARMIN545S

Easiest way is to take the unit to West Marine (or wherever they can do it), hook it to their cable, and see what happens. If it operates correctly, a cable is about $22 and in stock. Cheap fix and easy cable install. Call ahead to make sure cable is in stock.
