How many ball bearings are there supposed to be on each side of the front axle of the Schwinn Point Beach model S4852WM bike?

There will always be a small gap in the bearing ring, and not all hubs take the same amount. However, if the balls are 3/16" there are almost always 10 on each side. If they are 1/4 inch (less common) then 9 is the correct amount. DO NOT replace only some of them - replace only in a full set of 20 or 18.

Value of Schwinn bike #S4973TGA

Value is dependent on type of bike (esp. # of speeds), equipment level and mechanical/paint condition. Check Craigslist for similar bikes. Serial number is not helpful - need model of bike.

What is the shape of the handle bars on the Schwinn High Timber Girl's bike?

These are certainly not racing style bars; but the modern, hybrid riser handlebar.

They will not sweep back toward the rider as much as a beach cruiser handlebar; but could be adjusted rearward to come closer to the rider. They definitely allow for a more upright riding position than many other handlebars though.10_19_2012_7_26_19_pm.jpg

I can't get the front brake close enough to the tire so it stops

Firs, put a clamp (or a helper) to hold the working end of the brakes against the wheel rim, this will make the brake cable loose. Now loosen the "anchor bolt" (see three different kinds of brakes pictured below) where the cable attached, then pull the slack out of the cable and retighten the anchor bolt. That provides a big adjustment. Now to make a finer adjustment, use the adjusting barrel. Good luck!

I just bought a Schwinn Discovery and the front fork is loose in the frame. When I hit the brakes, the fork rocks back and forth. I am not sure how to tighten it up?

If you bouht it from a Bike Shop, make them do it. And complain.

If you bought it at a box store don't bother, they're incompetent.

Remember, the side bolts on the stem loosen it so adjustment can be made with the top cap bolt. You tighten the side bolts to lock in that adjustment. The top cap bolt is only for MAKING the adjustment, not KEEPING it.

Schwinn Scotch bike. Can't get the front wheel on. Have removed 1 nut and 1 washer from each side but the forks will not fit down onto the "screws" almost as if the forks are not set wide enough.

Stand the bike on seat and handlebars.
Have somebody steady the bike.
Bend the forks outward with both hands as you lower wheel into place.

I just purchased a Schwinn "Safari" 16" boys bike

Why do you need the manual? It is more than likely a coaster brake bike, and a users manual is not going to answer any technical stuff anyway. If, you are concerned with the safety of it, go to a Schwinn bicycle dealer and have them check it out. Tire pressure is on the sidewall of the tire.

I have a schwinn XR-8 bike and when riding the front wheel is making a squealing sound. Doe it need to be oiled. I bought it used

If it's in the bearings, yes, lube or bearing replacement may be needed.

A squirt-in lube MAY penetrate the bearings but it would be a band-aid, not a fix.

There are several bearing styles out there. Some are sealed and some are loose ball bearings. Either one requires disassembly for fresh grease to be applied.

I'd get a bike shop to look at it.

Childs 12 inch mongoose is new, but back wheel does not spin prop

The bikes are pre-assembled by a machine that overtightens the rear axle.  I had the same problem with my daugher's 12 inch huffy princess bike and my other duaghter's 16 inch Schwinn bike.  If you loosen the nuts on the back axle it fixes the problem.  I have read that the idea thing for these bike is to have them re-assembled and re-lubricated by a bike shop, but I thought this might cost as much as I paid for the bike.
