It sounds as though your power supply is old and not providing its peak power as it used to. It can power the drives but does not have enough power to send the information to the motherboard as well.

It may be time to replace you power supply which is a rather cheap and fairly easy install.

My hdd cables is damaged .Can I disconnect my cdrom cable and use it as a hdd cable because I don't need cdrom cable now.I am using old p4 machine and ide cable .

yes you can use the ide cable from the cd rom in place of the hard drive ide cable.
I assume you have two cables that are ide in the pc

you could make the cdrom drive a slave via its toggle switches and the hard drive as master and run them on one cable if the cable has two plug ends on it for two drives . depends on what type of ide cable you have.

If the hard drive is a master drive setting on toggle switch you can run it on the cd rom IDE cable

How do i install this drive?

Unplug the power cable from your power supply and open up your computer Don't forget to wear your antistatic wrist band. Determine which drive bay you are going to install a CD-ROM into. You should pick on of the uppermost drive bays. Before you install a CD-ROM, make sure you have the proper jumper settings. Since we are only installing a single CD-ROM, set the jumpers as MASTER. The jumper settings are different for each CD-ROM drive, so consult your owner's manual so you know which pins to cover up. Once you have the jumpers set, install your CD-ROM in the computer's case. How you secure the CD-ROM in one of the uppermost drive bays depends on your case. Some CD-ROM drives have to be screwed into the drive bay, while other cases come with brackets (like mine) to attach to the CD-ROM drive so that it slides into the drive bay and locks in place.

Connect the power to the back of the CD-ROM drive, then connect the ribbon cable to the back of the CD-ROM drive. Your ribbon cable has three connectors, one in the middle and one on each end. The middle connector is a "SLAVE" connector that is used if you would install an additional CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive.
Connect one of the end connectors to the CD-ROM drive, and connect the other end connector to the appropriate spot on your motherboard. Note, hard drives and CD-ROM drives have the same style of connector on the motherboard. You want to connect your CD-ROM drive to the motherboard slot that isn't red or is the highest numbered of all the IDE slots.

Power on your computer after you plug it in. Your computer should recognize the new CD-ROM. If it doesn't, Click start control panel administrive tools, computer management, device manager scroll down cd-dvd rom drives you might see a yellow question mark ? right click to update driver, roll back driver,or select properties general troubleshoot, select driver click to reinstall drivers click update driver
Hope this helps

Reinstalling the original cd rom that came in the computer. do i need to change the jumper settings. it is a samsung sc-148

That depends upon the IDE cable you are attaching the CD ROM to.
There are two IDE cables attached to the motherboard, on IDE 1 connector/cable will be your boot hard drive (C drive) and this will be jumpered to Master and you can attach the CD ROM drive to this cable and set the jumper on the CD drive as Slave.
On IDE 2 connector/cable if there are no drives attached to this cable then the CD ROM drive can be jumpered as Master or Slave..
If there is another drive on the same IDE 2 cable then look at the jumper on that drive, if it is jumpered to Master then the CD drive needs to be jumpered to Slave. If the existing drive is jumpered as Slave then the CD drive needs to be jumpered as Master.
Both drives on the same IDE cable cannot be jumpered with the same setting.

Hi everyone, i had a problem on my PC and i tried everything but none of it works. If i connect the IDE and the power cord on my cd-rom/hard drive, there's no power enters on my cd-rom or hard drive and it...

Double check you are connecting them the correct way !

Power connectors have a shape to them so its quite easy to see how they go.

IDE cables usually have a pin blanked off and a pin missing on the drive.
They are usually numbered also and pin one is usually by the RED wire on the connector.

If you are putting both drives on the same able you should set the ROM drive as SLAVE by moving the small jumper on the back of th drive.

Misplaced rompaq diskette

You probably need to change the boot order in the bios to make the computer boot from the cd rom before any local hard drives.

F2 is usually used to access the BIOS, you have to press it immeadiately upon seeing the first screen, which usually displays the name of the manufacturer, and from there you have to find the section to change the boot order.

My computer will not read any of my disk or install

when you say disk did you mean hard disk? if you do... did you recenlty install a new hard disks?... if you did... did you check the jumper-master-slave configuration when installing the new hard disk?
only one hard disk can be configured as master in each ide channel. set up to master (not single) the one on the end of the ide cable and set up to slave the one attached to the midlle of the ide cable.
check that both hard drives are properly attached to the cable and that the power cable is properly seated.

when you say disk did you mean cd rom disks or dvd disks?
does it work in other computers? if it doesnt.. you cd/dvd disks may be the problem
are you trying to read a dvd disk on a cd rom only drive... you can't read a dvd in a cd rom drive.
if you cd/dvd rom drive should read the disk you're putting in, check in device manager if your system detects the cd/dvd rom drive. if it doesn't: check the physical connections (reseat ide cable, check jumper configuration for slave and master on your cd/dvd rom drive and check that the power cable is properly seated), check also in device manager the properties of the cd/dvd rom drive and check if it says on device status if the device is working correctly. if it doesn't post the error code that it may give you or google a solution with error code.

suggestion.. be more specific when posting your questions.. that way it will be easier for a solution to be provided as your issue could be interpreted in different ways

Compaq cd drive to fast

The speed of a CD is not related to the communications speed, so you should set those parameters back, to the fastest available, because data stored on a CD is generally always digital, except for an analog AudioCD. I don't know what seems too fast, but if it is music playback, then it is probably a problem with an audio codec, only a very slight chance of a bad or wrong CD driver, that has mis-identified the CD drive.

If I knew more about what you are experiencing, I could advise further.

D drive problems

Krazy Kat
This age of computer will most likely be an IDE CD rom drive
You may have a break in the IDE cable it has 40 wires in it if it is
IDE and may be connected to its own IDE controller or may be set up as a slave to the hard drive on the same cable.

if it is i slave it will have jumpers on it that tell if the drive is slave or master . Check these are set up to hard drive master and then cd rom as slave if on same cable

if it is faulty you may need a new ide cd rom
not sure how hard it is to get ide but with onew of these you could convert to sata type drive http://www.umart.com.au/umart1/pro/Products-details.phtml?id=10&id2=25&bid=2&sid=71095
