Canon PIXMA MP780 - will copy only in greyscale and color - not in black and white
This printer was working fine, then one day it stopped copying in black and prints out only copies in greyscale and slows down to a crawl. It does okay with color. When printing out something in the computer, it prints in black and colors and comes out at the higher speed. I like the printer and
don't want to throw it out, but I need to copy letters and items in black at the regular speed. Does anyone out there know what the problem is and how to fix it?

Here is the link to your printer. it has the troubleshooting guide and drivers and such. i don't know much about the gray scale and why it is doing what it is but i thought you might think it would come in handy.

May be you printer had been set auto color.
To set it manually, go to printer setup in your computer.
Select you file you wish to print the click print.
On pop up printer set up you should see Canon MP 210 series printer.
Then Click properties, you can see now the printer options like media, quality, paper source, color, greysacle and priview. Click greyscale to get monochrome printing.click Ok and Ok again. You should get a black white ( BW) printing result.
In addition, to duplicate the file to get hard copies from your printer press Black button before do copying to get non color hard copy.
are you sure you've attached a colored print cartridge? Because if you don't have a colored print cartridge, the printer won't print out colored documents. OR, if you DO HAVE a colored cartridge, check if it still has ink. Have it refilled if it's got none. OR... if you got a cartridge, and has ink in it, the settings of the printer itself might be set to: black and white or greyscale. You can change this setting at the settings, though! good luck!
Mine was stuck on fine photo resolution too and it wouldn't print in normal black. I tried lots of things and the only thing that seemed to work was pushing the photo button and then pushing the copy button again. Good luck.
Are you scanning both black and white and color the same way? The ADF (automatic document feeder) uses a different scanning area than when you place the document on the scanning glass. If you open the scanner cover, look to the left of the main scanner glass to the narrow strip used for the ADF. Make sure this narrow strip is clean -- no ink or white-out or scratches. This can make your copies look dirty or smudged.
Sounds to me your print head is plugged up. This is not usual though because the majority of people use black ink much more. So, in your printer utility, do a deep cleaning. If that does not work, there is a thing called a purge unit in it. This is a usual way of draining waste ink to a pad that soaks it up. if the hose, or other parts are clogged, it backs the ink up and causes the print head to clog. If this is the start of it, do not waste your ink cleaning, and try not to let it sit too long. Contact canon, and let them kno what you think it is.
