This link will send you to the illustrated parts list on the john deere site. It shows the belt routing in the part diagram. Hope this solves your headache.

You should get the same belt that came with it, they tend to last alot longer ! Most of the time the deck has the diagram on the deck to show how belt goes on,sometimes under the pulley guards, you can also type in your model in google you should get good results.I can also help you with getting belt at a good price.

Without knowing your mower for sure, I think I know what you may need to do. Most often, you just need to remove the block that the pattern is on. These are most often bolted onto the shaft. If you don't have your parts book for your mower, you may bee able to look it up online.
