My Hobart Mixer AF 200, was mixing bread dough....it "slipped" out of gear.... when I opened it up the shaft that touches the main drive seems to be not "touching" not sure if this makes sense please ask me any questions for further more information.

I will reply in a short time with some photos and a better explanation...

  • boogieking May 25, 2011

It slipped when in third gear .....the hook is no longer moving......

here are some photos ....the arrow is pointing to the shaft that seems to be the problem.....this shaft seems to be "jumping" up a little and then the cog is not making contact with the "worm drive"? main drive shaft.....

  • boogieking May 25, 2011

I don't believe the gear is worn or broken ...I will remove that shaft and have a look as you suggest....how do I remove this gear?

  • boogieking May 28, 2011

and how do I pull out the shaft to check the bushing and bearing?

  • boogieking May 29, 2011

I have drawn on the picture to highlight the teeth.... but I think it gives the wrong impression..I don't think the teeth are worn....I want to do what was suggested next and check the bearings and bushings on that shaft but I need to know how I take it out to check?

  • boogieking May 29, 2011

don't think the shaft is broken.....if the cover is taken off .....and then the small cover over the two shafts that are next to one another is taken off.......if I put pressure on the shaft that is the problem( putting downward pressure on it)and turn the machine on.... it all spins for the few seconds that I can keep the pressure on it.....

  • boogieking May 29, 2011

Pulled it apart...worked out how to pull one cog off after another until I could remove the shaft.....it is all intact it fits snugly into the bearing at the bottom, and the bearing fits snugly into place as well.....this is driving me crazy!

  • boogieking May 29, 2011

    Thanks Mark.....the shafts look straight.

  • boogieking May 30, 2011

I am looking at a diagram of an a200 model hobart mixer....and if the parts for this one are similar to the af-200 then it looks like I may be missing the spacer that goes between the small gear at the top and the bearing.

  • boogieking May 30, 2011

the teeth look fine ....no ground up metal parts in the grease.....we bought the mixer second hand and this is the first time we have tried to make bread in it ......being second hand that is why I think it might be possible for the spacer to be missing......will look at the lever to see if it is engaging the gears....

I would like if you could do something for me. can you spin the machine by hand and see if the shafts are bent. I'm going to look up the micro phish on your machine so i can better help explain things.
i may need to call the company if i can't find it online watch will be first thing in the morning. i will send you a email to let you know. in the mean time check and make sure nothing is bent.

thank you for pictures you say that the bearings are tight, and nothing is bent, thats good news! did you make sure that lever is engaging the gears the way it should and is not out of adj. that would be the next thing i would look at. a spacer doesn't just vanish have you had it since new? if you bought it second hand then yes it might be miss something so i'm think that something is out of adj. I have a call into the company for the micro phish and parts list, if they are not closed for memorial day i will have it in the morning. could you send me a copy of the one you have? my email is madminibiker@gmail.com
    thanks mark

this is VERY unlikely but the teeth on gear the might be worn, while you have it apart look over the gears for anything that doesn't look right. you seem to be on the ball so i don't think i have to go into detail of what to look for.

have you use it for light mixing? I'm glad you said something about making bread, that puts a lot of load on the machine compared to cake mix. that will make a worn out or missing part show it's ugly little head. i know you over the bearings but if you don't mind check them one more time. use your finger to turn the bearing to see if it has rough spot or really loose. i'm not second guessing your judgement but just always double checking.

I've never worked on one of these units, but from the sound of things, it sounds like the shaft might be broken. Can you operate it and see where the spinning of the shaft ends...it seems like if the gear spins (if you can see it), but the shaft doesn't, then the shaft might be broken.
If the shaft isn't broken, than possibly the support for the shaft may have cracked...not sure. Can you tell if there's any slack in the gear assembly or shaft? That might give a clue where the unit is broken at.
I will keep a lookout for any further information from you on the problem, and take it from there.

In what speed is it slipping? You only use 1st speed for dough, right?
Can you put it in gear and stop the hook from moving with your hand?In that case problem is in spring clip.

if you are using greater speed this will generally happen

in the200a mixer there is no cluch it is direct gear driven.
if it is slipping it caused bt a bad gear or gear pin. this is a key way that locks the gear to the shaft. rebuildlig could cost big bucks

Good day!

Try to remove the gear that connected to the main drive or look at the gear teeth if it worn out/blunt.

if the gear is worn out please replace it.

Or try to see the bushing or bearing at the bottom and top of the gear if it is loose or capacious, replaced it with the same type, size and part #.

Thank you

yes I see, please try to shake the shaft.
if the shaft is shaking please check the bushing or bearing connected to the shafting.
And base on the picture I saw that the shaft teeth is partially worn out (base on pix)

Hobart A-200 mixer gets hot and weak. Motor housing gets too hot to keep your hand on it. Service tech told me the motors usually don't go out. What other problem could it be?

I'd say you're most likely overloading the mixer. This mixer, and others similar in size, are frequently overloaded by people making pizza dough. If you are making dough, keep in mind the A-200's capacity is 9 lb. of 40% A.R. pizza dough, mixed for 5 minutes maximum. If you need to mix longer, the batch must be cut down even smaller, but I don't even know if you're mixing dough.

Try running the mixer unloaded (i.e. nothing in the bowl) for ten minutes or more and see if it gets hot. If it still gets hot, the motor's start circuit (varies depending upon age of the A-200; Hobart used numerous motors in the A-200 over the years, incorporating different starting circuits) most likely has problems. If it doesn't get hot when operating unloaded, then you're probably overheating the mixer by overloading it.

Check your recipe against the capacity chart found here: http://www.primasupply.com/images/hobarta200.pdf

You may be overloading the unit. Hope this helps.

Hobart A-200 mixer (OLD!) runs hot & shuts down.

You have killed it by overloading the bowl. Hobart recomends no more than 65% bowl capacity on doughs & 75% on batters or icings. Replace the motor or the whole unit

Bread dough hook slips when mixing

This is not a solution but I think you have a serious problem you might have sheared some gear teeth whent the mixer jammed and it only manifests itself under a heavy load, I would take it to a repair guy, those mixers are expensive and it would be worth it.

Hobart A200 diagnosis

the first A-200's have a worm gear drive that will slip when old but also when mixing dough somtimes the dough will push the mixer aherad of its self and look like its slowing but its just catching up. if you have a old worm shaft it will have a spring on it is how to tell. it is replaced with a shaft that is all keyed and has no slip or give unless a key shears.
