I have a box that has four 110(black, white and copper) wires coming in. (1) is power, (2) is light (3) is outlet & (4) is light across the room. I need power to (2), (3) & (4) but need a switch to (2)...


Firstly (1) will be Black=hot, White=neutral and Copper=Ground. Don't work on these wires with them live.
All copper wires will be connected together and if possible, the metal box earth lug.
You will need a SPST or SPDT switch (image of SPDT switch is shown below) to mount in your junction box. If your switch has a ground lug, you need to also connect the copper wire there.
(1) Black will connect to Switch Common, (3) Black and (4) Black. Note: all can connect to the Switch Common connection as the switch will generally allow 3 wires to be connected per terminal; one push terminal and two screw pressed terminals.
(1) White will be connected to (2) White, (3) White and (4) White. For this connection, you can use a twist cap of the correct size to parallel these neutral wires.
(2) Black will connect to other free connection on the switch. There may be two free connections, so the one you use will basically determine which direction the switch will be on/off.
Once connected and checked, you can power up. If correctly wired, you should now have switched power to (2) and continuous power to (3) and (4).

How do I connect a day night switch


I assume your talking about a day/night sensor that controls one or more lights. If that's the case the sensor has 3 wires, B/R/and W. The lights have 2 wires B and W. And you have a 110Vac power line with 2 wires B and W. To wire it. Connect the black wire from the power supply to the black wire from the sensor. Connect the red wire from the sensor to the black wires going to the lights. Connect the remaining white wires all together.

I have to replace the power switch on my Delta Shopmaster 10" radial arm saw. I have the switch, which is a Delta 438010170206S Rocker Switch has (4) terminals. I need to know which wire goes where????


How many wires do you have? The switch is probably a 2 pole, On-Off. If you have 2 wires, connect them to two terminals on one side of the switch (use an ohm-meter to find which terminals make-break). If there are 4 wires, connect the black and white power cord wires to different sides of the switch. Then connect the two motor wires to the two remaining terminals. DO NOT CONNECT THE BLACK AND WHITE POWER WIRES TO THE MAKE-BREAK TERMINALS OF THE SWITCH. This creates a short in the power cord and will trip a breaker.

I have a light switch with 3 wires that have to be hooked to it.3 black wires 3 white wires and 3 ground wires.The light switch has 1 place for the black 1 place for white and 1 place for ground.


You have 3 cables entering the box.
Each cable has black and white and ground wire.
You have a single pole switch.
The switch has 2 brass-colored screws and 1 green-colored screw.

1) One thing is certain: all the ground wires connect together and then connect to green screw on switch.

2) After that, we are guessing without more information.

3) What does the switch control?

4) If the switch controls a hallway light, and there is another switch for the same light: then you have wrong switch. You need 3-way switch. Buy 3-way switch and re-post question at fixya.

5) If switch controls a bath fan-light combo, repost question at fixya.

6) If the switch controls a regular light, and no other switch is involved: then the following information might work. Or you need to do testing and re-post another question at fixya.

-White wires probably connect together and are covered with a wire nut.

-Then two black wires connect to one brass screw and 1 black wire connects to other brass screw.

-But which black wire?

-Only one of the black wires has power from circuit breaker. That is hot wire.
-Hot wire connects to 1st brass screw on switch. Either screw.

-And then connect one of the other black wires to 2nd brass screw. Turn on power and see if light turns on.
-Try other black wire same way.
-The black wire(s) that turn on lights on should be left connected to 2nd brass screw.
-If one black wire did not turn on lights, then that wire probably connects to 1st brass screw along with hot wire.

How do you connect the electric to wire bathroom lights on one switch, and the fan on the other switch, The power comes in through the switch, Both switches are located in the same box


In the box, connect all white wires together, that is the incoming power, the lights and the fan.
Then take the black supply wire and connect it to the bottom terminal of one of the switches and cut and install a jumper from that terminal to the bottom terminal of the other switch.
Next connect a black wire that goes to the light(s) to the top terminal of one of the switches. When this switch is turned on, power should flow from the supply thru the switch to the light.
Finally, connect another black wire that goes to the fan to the top terminal of the other switch. This will turn on the fan.
All ground or green wires connect together and the green terminal on each switch should have a piece of green wire to connect to all the other green ground wires.

Joan, In the box where you are placing the switch, you should have three pairs of wires. Each pair should have a black wire and a white wire (plus each pair should have a bare ground wire). One pair of wires goes out to the bedroom entry. Another pair goes out to the closet light. The third pair should be coming from your electric panel and provides the power - this is the hot pair. First determine which pair is the hot pair. If you don't have a meter or tester, you can temporarily connect each pair in turn to a lamp and turn on the power. Repeat until you find the pair coming from the panel. Turn off the power. Now take note of the four screws on the switch. Two of the screws on one side may have a small metal bar connecting the two screws together. With the power off, connect the black hot wire to one of these two screws. If there is no metal bar you will have to use a short jumper wire between two screws on one side of the switch to connect them together. Connect one other black wire to either screw on the other side of the switch. Connect the last black wire to the last screw. (There is also probably a green screw by itself. Connect one of the ground wires to this, and wrap the other two ground wires tightly around the ground wire you connected to the green screw.) Now connect all three white wires together (not to the switch) with a wire nut. Install the switch in the box and turn on the power. Please vote if you found this helpful. HI, I HAVE A SYLVANIA MODEL SA 170 , I CAN´T SEE THE NUMBERS WHEN I´M IN FROM THE SCREEN, IT´S APPEARS VERY DARKS


If I understand correctly, you have Sylvania 170 timer and the display doesn't light up.
If you have different problem, add a comment.

A) If this is existing installation and timer display worked correctly before, then it sounds like timer malfunctioned or power to timer is interrupted. Check breaker, and then pull out timer and test for power.

B) If this is new installation, then 2 possible things:
1) Timer defective: exchange for new one.
2) Timer not wired correctly.

Review wiring:
Timer replaces single pole switch.
Single pole switch has two wires
Timer has 3 wires: Blue Black White
Timer has additional wire to run internal clock and to light up display.
If timer not wired correctly, then display will not light up.

Here is correct wiring:
a) Two wires from switch.
b) Connect timer-blue wire to one of the switch wires. Choose either one for now. You will have to choose other wire if display doesn't light up.
c) Connect timer-black wire to other switch wire.
d) Timer-white wire does NOT connect to either switch wire. Look in back of electric box. There are white wires twisted together and covered with wire nut. These are neutral wires. Connect timer-white wire to neutral wires. This will power the clock and display.
e) If your box does not have the white wires described in d), then connect timer-white wire to bare ground wire.
f) Turn power ON. Does display light up?
g) If display lights up, switch is wired correctly.
h) If display does not light up, then reverse timer-blue wire and timer-black wire shown in step b) and c).

If I understand correctly you have a 3-speed fan.
And you need a 3-speed replacement pull-chain-type switch

Lowes carries 3 speed fan switches in the light fixture department.
These switches have multiple wires.
At any given time, there is one-and-only-one wire that connects to power from wall switch.
Lets call this the Power wire.
As you pull the chain, the power passes through the switch and goes to one-and-only-one of the other wires.
The other wires connect to windings in the motor.
The different motor windings control fan speed.

The key to replacing the switch is recording where each wire went before you disconnect old switch.
Once you know which of these wires is the Power wire, then you can test other wires with a continuity tester.
You also know the pull-chain sequence is OFF - HIGH - Medium - Low
Mark wires in fan and mark wires on old switch.
Pull out old switch.
Use regular electrical tester to find which wire in the fan is the power wire (separate wires, turn on power and test each wire to metal part of fan)
Now test the switch wires.
The switch is out of the fan.
You marked the wires so you know which wire is power wire.
Put the continuity tester on the power wire.
Test power wire to each of the other wires.
Click the switch and test to each of the other wires. Mark which wire lights up continuity tester.
Click the switch and test again. Mark which wire lights up continuity tester.
Click again, until each wire is marked in the sequence.
When you click the switch and no wire lights up, then that is the Switch OFF position.
Do the same test on the new pull-chain switch.
Connect the wires to match your testing.

Installing a 7 day digital wall timer


Swylite LST100 timer has 4 wires. Red, Blue, Black, White
Timer has more wires than wall switch because timer has electric clock inside. And with + series Swylite timer, it also has led bulb that needs power.

Timer can replace ordinary on-off switch
-On-off switch has 2 screws, so 2 wires (plus ground wire) connect to on-off switch
-Three of the four timer wires are used when replacing on-off switch
-Red wire is not used, it is capped off

Timer can replace 3-way switch
-Three way switch has 3 screws, so 3 wires (plus ground wire) connect to 3-way switch
-One of the screws on 3-way switch is colored dark (it is crucial to identify the wire that comes off dark screw so timer can be wired correctly)

Lets replace on-off switch see diagram
Timer black goes to Hot wire
Timer blue goes to Load (light, fan, motor)
Timer white goes to Neutral
Timer red is capped off.

How to check which wire is Hot, Neutral and Load
Switch you are replacing has 2 wires > one is Hot, the other goes to Load
Remove these two wires. Separate wires so you can test. Turn on power. Tape tester leads to wood sticks so hands are away from power. Test each wire to bare copper wire.
When tester lights up >> that is Hot wire >> please connect this wire to Timer black wire
The other wire goes to Load >> please connect this wire to Timer blue wire.
Now test for Neutral. Test Hot wire to other wires inside box. Neutral should be white. When tester lights up, that is Neutral. Please connect Timer white wire to neutral. IF YOU DO NOT have a neutral, you can connect Timer white to bare ground wire until you have time to drop a Neutral into the box.

Replace a 3-way switch see diagram
Three-way switch has 3 wires.
Identify which wire connects to Dark screw on switch >> and then please connect this wire to Timer Black wire.
Timer white wire connects to Neutral
Timer blue and red wires connect to other two wires that came off switch ... they connect to either one.

Replacing a pull chain 3-way ceiling fan light switch


OK .. the thick black and white are the power for the fan , are there also white wires on the lamp sockets ..??
The thick black wire should connect to the black wire on the switch.
The small black wires connect to the red and blue wire on the switch .. two small black wires each .. that should give you a position for 2 lights , and 4 lights, on the step switch .. but there should be white wires from the lamp sockets connected to the thick white from the fan .
