Question about Garmin zumo 550 GPS Receiver

1 Answer

Zumo won't power from either cradle

Connected zumo to laptop for map upgrade, now it will not power from either cradle (one on motorcycle and one in truck).

Power only shows from USB connection.

Since power is not recognized music nor bluetooth works.

Already reset to factory default with lower right screen and power.

Also reloaded firmware 4.30 over old.

Garmin wants $200 to replace.

Suggestions?

Thanks,

Cleo

I have the same issue. Unit runs on battery power, but will not take power from either cradle.

I have the same issue. I have tried both cradles and neither one is connecting with the unit

  • Anonymous Oct 02, 2008

I was on an Arkansas motorcycle trip and the XM radio stopped playing as the unit stopped working in the motorcycle cradle. When I tried it in the vehicle cradle, it worked at first, causing me to think the problem was with the cradle. Then I got a replacement motorcycle cradle, but it didn't solve the problem.

    Very disppointing

    Zumo 550 will not powerup

  • Anonymous Jan 23, 2009

Same happened to me last night. Anyone found an answer to it yet?

I have/had the problem that the Garmin550/Zumo looses power and switches of during the ride. My BMW dealer (A&S in Roseville, CA) sent the ssytem back to Garmin. I got a new craddle. The problem of loosing power and thus switching off remaines. A&S sent it back it back to Garmin again. After 6 weeks the GPS returned. They replaced the battery. I received it yesterday. Don't know if the problem is solved. I have heard that this problem of losing power is a known problem. Nobody could tell me for sure what causes it. I have a Garmin 550 (non-Zumo) in the car too. That workes perfect. It's the Zumo that's a bad and sad product.

SOURCE: my zumo won't power on

This sometimes happens if the cradle is owered while you connect the zumo...i guess it hits some wrong contacts first and goes bonkers. I'd advise th zumo users to pack a small allen screw bit to unscrew the battery, just in case it freezes or blacks out again....better safe than lost in the middle of nowhere!

SOURCE: GARMIN NUVI 200 SAYS NO DETAILED MAPS FOUND THAT SUPPORT ROUTING

The downloaded map file (ex: "Garmin_RMU_CNNANT2010C.exe") contains all of North America, and you must select the correct subsection (ex: "Lower 49 States+PR") that you purchased, which is listed on your Garmin myMaps page (My.Garmin.com).

I am a GPS newbie as well and selected "all of North America" when installing my free nuvi 205 map update. A mistake that's too easy to make, esp. considering Garmin still has very little info about selecting the correct map subsection listed on their support site.

You do NOT need to re-download the huge map file, thankfully, but you must re-install (30+ min) to choose the correct map subsection.

"Bad on Garmin, IMHO for not making important details like that clear to us new owners." My thoughts exactly.

You didn't say how long you've had your device, but if you haven't registered your device at Garmin.com yet, go do that and they will then offer you a free upgrade.

Other than that, I don't think you'll find anything free. The next best thing is to buy the "nüMaps Lifetime™". I felt this was the best deal they have.

SOURCE: Garmin 550t. When i have my zumo on my motorcycle

Moisture has probably gotten inside the motorcylce cradle through the connector pins. if you take it apart, there is a very small ribbon cable that attaches from the pins to the cicuit board. if moisture gets on the end of the ribbon cable it can short out the small power tracers on the cable and cuircuit board. this happened to me. i had to buy a new cradle. 85.00

Hello,

The microphone input from the Zumo 665 motorcycle mounting cradle is the smaller 2.5mm jack.
Be sure to use this one as some microphone jacks will require a 3.5mm to 2.5mm adapter.
The audio output is the 3.5mm jack.
Be sure not to confuse the two.
It may be necessary to have a custom 5 or 7 pin DIN adapter made to connect between the GW audio system and the Zumo.
It would be best to consult with your local Honda GoldWing dealer for more information on interfacing the GW audio system.

If your zumo 400 or 500 series will not power on, or performs strangely after powering up, follow the steps (described on the Garmin website) below to perform a soft reset:
  1. Connect the zumo to a power source such as a computer or AC outlet
  2. Hold the zoom (+) and ON buttons at the same time for five seconds
  3. If this does not restore power, remove the battery for five seconds
  4. Place the battery back in the zumo
The zumo will now power on. Because the battery may deplete while the zumo is locked up, it is ideal to leave the zumo connected to power to allow it time to charge.
Once the battery has charged, follow the steps on the Garmin site to update the operating software in the zumo. (just copy this link to get there https://buy.garmin.com/support/searchSupport/case.faces?caseId={8576ba20-e948-11dc-d6fc-000000000000} )

Good luck,
Michael

Speaker doesn't work when using Garmin on my motorcycle but it works in my truck. got any ideas?

there is a speaker on the cradle for the car and none on the bike cradle probably due to the exposure to the elements when on the bike and i think the Zumo must be powered from the bike for the speaker on the Zumo to work when riding.

GPS is not getting power on the motorcyclen mount.

If you're sure the power cord is getting power, then the mount has likely failed. Mine has failed 3 times. Replacing the mount will fix the problem as it did on mine. If the unit is less than 1 year from purchase, Garmin will warranty replace it for free. If not, it'll cost you about $85 plus shipping to put a new one on.

Use the allen wrench to remove the battery. Let stand for 5 minutes and replace the battery. It should start fine. Mine has done this 3 times since I purchased it.

Zumo not accepting a 12v charge

Mike,

My friend had the same issue as you mention. Puts his Zumo 550 on his bike only to have it discharge in a few hours. He later found out the pins on his motorcycle cradle had corroded and therefore was not keeping the Zumo charged. His solution was to purchase a new motorcycle cradle at about $100.00 CDN.

Power supply to garmin zumo 450

When I installed the Garmin cradle for my Zumo 450 on my bike I installed the power cable directly to the Main line going into my headlight.I then ran the cable out of the back of the headlight and hid it behind my windshield and then, out through the handle bars up to the cradle, you can barely see it. Works great for me!

Hope this helped,

DTL
