Hi pgiles1280

Remove your spark plug and check to be sure you are getting fire at the spark plug, if you are then:
Check/Clean/Replace your fuel filter if you have one.
Also make sure you are using fresh fuel...and oil mix if your using a two cycle mower or weedeater with the oil to the right mixture and not too much oil as it can cause hard starting.
If the mower/weedeater is over a year old, then I recommend that you buy and install a new carburetor repair kit, because the diaphragm will get hard and that will cause it to be hard to crank.
Sounds like you will need to clean the carburetor or replace your carburetor internal rubber parts like the diaphgram and O rings.
Be sure to use compressed air to blow out all the fuel and air passages.
Be careful when blowing out the passages, because there are sometimes small rubber type seats in the bottom of some of the passages.
Sometimes you can get by with priming the carburetor or using starting fluid and letting it run a few times like that and it will flush the gunk out of the jets, but most of the time you will need to rebuild the carburetor.
Keep in mind that the float for the carburetor must be level when you go to reassemble the carburetor or follow the instructions you get with the carburetor kit.
When you clean your carburetor and remove the jet screws, you will first need to lightly seat the jet screws.
But before you lightly seat the jet screws count the number of turns it takes to seat the jet screws from their original position.
Be sure to mark the turns down on a piece of paper.
That way when you put the jets back in, you know to lightly seat them first and then turn them back out to their orginal position before you started.
Once you have your carburetor rebuilt that should solve your problem.

I have a zero turn Yard Man 42 inch mower, it stops running when I am mowing ,it acts like a safty switch, when it stops the mower starts up again.

It could be a problem in your seat safety switch. You can enter your model number here: www.mtdparts.com and see a schematic.

Problem: How to start the mower (Ariens A173K22). The mower sat all winter. I have gassed it up and checked the oil. Pulled the cord. Nothing happens. I bought the mower new in the fall and used it...

For initial start up, I suggest removing the air filter off of the intake to the carburetor. Then get an aerosol spray can of carburetor/choke cleaner at auto parts store or Walmart. Your next step is to open the choke and the throttle of the mower and spray a couple shots into the carburetor throat. Then, choke the carburetor and immediately pull the starter cord.If it fails to attempt to run, repeat the process. I would get your manual, but I need the serial number off of the mower. You provided the model number, try to find the serial number and input that info here to download a manual. I think you can order a printed one from here as well.

Starts but almost immediately stops. Will restart but repeats stopping. Looks like choke reverts too soon.

If this is a prime type carb then the carb need cleaned and a new needle and seat installed. It starts and almost immediatley stops indicates its running on the primed fuel only. Some models of briggs engines do have a auto matic choke. I doubt if its this one.
Please indicate engine model and type numbers which are located on the front of the blower housing or on a tab that sticks off the side of the blower housing. If I had these numbers I could determine if your engine has a auto choke

I have same mower and just fixed what seems like a similar problem description. I had gone down the fuel system route and the symptoms just didn't add up. Stopped abruptly w/o sputtering once I reached warm-up temp. Replaced the solid state ignition (34443C now part number 3444D). Problem corrected and just mowed my 1/3rd acre w/ no issues.

Its starts but will cut off

The problem you are having is due to dirt and gunk in the carbeurator. Spray a carbeurator cleaner into the air chamber [remove the air filter] and run it a couple of times then let it sit for two hours while the carbeurator cleaner does its job of dissolving any debris. Then start it up. IF this does it, great, if not repeat the cleaning technique.

If all of this doesn't do it, then the carbeurator will have to be removed and either replaced or rebuilt.
